A recent surge in tensions between Thais and Cambodians in France has sparked concern within the Thai community residing there. The strain follows a series of incidents where Cambodians reportedly provoked and harassed Thais, according to a Facebook post by a woman known by the nickname Prai Phansang.

The message, which rapidly gained traction, warns Thais in France—approximately 80,000 strong including second and third-generation descendants—to report any threats to the police. The provocations appear to be rooted in historical tensions rather than directives from the Cambodian leadership.

A notable incident involved a Thai woman exercising near her home. She was deliberately bumped into by a group of Cambodians who taunted her with pointed remarks about Thai-Cambodian relations. Responding swiftly, she quoted French law, which prompted the group to flee when a local came to her aid. She later reported the incident to the police.

Similar encounters have been reported in workplaces and public spaces. A Thai worker routinely faced taunts from a Cambodian colleague, while another incident at a restaurant called "Thai"—run by Cambodians—led to discomfort and disappointment for a Thai patron expecting authentic cuisine.

Public transportation has also been a backdrop for uneasy interactions. One Thai woman recounted being targeted on a train by a Cambodian couple who accused Thailand of bullying Cambodia. Opting for silence, she diffused the situation, as did another Thai woman in a Nice restaurant, who remained calm when challenged by a Cambodian waiter.

While there are approximately 10,000 Thais in France, their presence is dwarfed by larger communities in countries like the United States and South Korea. Many Thais in France are temporary workers, not political refugees, unlike those who fled political tensions in Thailand.

The Cambodian community in France numbers around 12,700, according to French statistics, a legacy of France's colonial history and the exodus following the Khmer Rouge regime. The figure of 80,000 likely includes descendants of earlier immigrants.

Thai nationals are advised to contact local authorities if they feel threatened. The police can be reached at emergency number 17, or they can seek assistance from the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris by calling +33 1 56 26 50 50. Engaging with the Thai community in France is also encouraged to create a support network.

The recent distress highlights underlying historical tensions. Both communities are urged to engage in dialogue, fostering understanding and preventing further harassment. With effective communication and support from authorities, the path to peaceful coexistence is not out of reach.
