Cambodia’s battle against malaria has received renewed backing from the United Kingdom, with British Ambassador Dominic Williams reaffirming the country’s status as a key beneficiary of the Global Fund during a high-level meeting in Phnom Penh.

On 25 August, Ambassador Williams met with Dr Huy Rekol, Director of the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control (CNM), to discuss Cambodia’s progress and ongoing challenges in public health. The talks centred on future collaboration and the UK’s continued support through the Global Fund, which has played a pivotal role in Cambodia’s efforts to eliminate malaria nationwide.

The British Embassy highlighted the UK’s longstanding commitment to the Global Fund, having contributed over £5.5 billion since its launch in 2002. As the third-largest donor, Britain remains deeply invested in strengthening health systems and tackling infectious diseases across the globe.

Cambodia has made notable strides in reducing malaria cases, with zero malaria-related deaths reported since 2018. The CNM is currently preparing a strategic plan aimed at achieving full malaria elimination by 2029, supported by regional initiatives such as the Global Fund’s Artemisinin-Resistance Initiative (RAI).

Ambassador Williams praised the CNM’s work as “incredible,” underscoring the importance of sustained international cooperation to meet public health goals. His visit signals a continued UK commitment to Cambodia’s health sector, particularly in combating malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV.

With the Global Fund’s backing and strong bilateral ties, Cambodia’s path toward a malaria-free future appears increasingly within reach.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

I thought charity begins at home.

How many billions contributed vs recipient dynastic wealth ?

On the surface, eventual eradication of the dangerously diseased blood suckers sounds like very good news.

Now, what about addressing the issue of mosquitos and malaria ?
