Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor celebrated for his leadership during 9/11, is set to receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom. The decision announced by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social has sparked debate due to Giuliani's recent turbulent history.

 

The accolade comes just days after Giuliani suffered back injuries in a minor car accident in New Hampshire. This award is the highest civilian honour in the US, acknowledging significant contributions to a country's prosperity or security. Trump hailed Giuliani as "the greatest mayor in the history of New York City" and praised him as a "great American patriot".

 

Giuliani gained international recognition as "America's Mayor" amid the chaos following the September 11 attacks, earning him an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. Despite his prior victories, Giuliani has faced legal and financial difficulties recently. These troubles include being sued for defamation after spreading false election fraud claims, leading to a $148 million damages payout and bankruptcy filing.

 

Trump's announcement follows a long history between the two, with Giuliani working as Trump's personal lawyer from 2018 to 2020. Despite their professional split in early 2021, they reportedly remain friends. Guliani has yet to publicly comment on receiving the medal, and the formal presentation date remains unknown.

 

The Medal of Freedom has been bestowed upon diverse recipients, from Muhammad Ali to Michael J. Fox. Giuliani's award links him to these celebrated figures despite recent controversies. Meanwhile, in 2017, Barack Obama granted honour to then-Vice President Joe Biden, according to the BBC.

 

Giuliani's recent accident involved a car collision, which resulted in him and others suffering non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been discharged from the hospital, though reports mention he sustained back injuries along with other minor wounds.

 

Giuliani's tale is a blend of iconic public service contrasted with troubled later years, highlighting the complexity behind Trump's decision. This announcement has generated mixed reactions, emphasising Giuliani’s fluctuating legacy.

I liked the 2001 version of Mayor Rudy. This version should "just fade away".  

I am suprised that Trump has yet to pin himself a medal of freedom.

The corruption laptop which proved to contain 0 evidence of crimes. Which is why Giiuliani released it close to the elections. So misleading excerpts could be taken from it with not enough time to debunk them.

Accept it. Rudi was right, the entire left that defamed and smeared him for years for his "Russian plant" were wrong. Apologies would a the 1st step to the lefts rehabilition.

What Russian disinformation/election interference that you are yapping about. Not a conspiracy but factual evidences as detailed by the Republican-led Senate Intelligence committee in their 1,000 pages report. Let me summarised the key findings for you.

Giuliani led the 1980s federal prosecution of New York City mafia bosses as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The findings by the Republicans Intelligence committee has concluded their investigation and there were evidences of Russian collusion to help Trump. Your rebuttal and denial were the expected piss in the wind.
