NHS Doctor Sentenced Over Self-Amputations and Insurance Fraud

In a bizarre twist of medical malpractice and deceit, 49-year-old Neil Hopper, an NHS surgeon from Truro, Cornwall, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. Hopper, known for performing countless amputations, orchestrated his own leg removals and deceitfully claimed £466,000 in insurance by alleging sepsis as the cause. The court revealed he froze his legs with dry ice to force the amputations, driven by a disturbing obsession with body modification and amputation.

The shocking trial at Truro Crown Court disclosed further grotesque details: Hopper's fascination with extreme pornography involving body mutilation. The surgeon pleaded guilty to fraud charges and three counts of possessing extreme material. Judge James Adkin emphasised the particularly high harm level associated with the offensive content, further questioning Hopper's judgement and character.

Reportedly, Hopper confided in a friend about exploiting the insurance claims, suggesting he intended to “milk it.” The prosecution exposed his long-standing ambition and unhealthy fixation on amputating his limbs. After his self-inflicted amputations in 2019, Hopper astonishingly returned to work within six months using prosthetic legs.

Despite his grim actions, Hopper maintained an unblemished professional record before his arrest in March 2023. While the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust vouched for Hopper’s professional conduct during his tenure, the case has, understandably, stirred panic among former patients. Some previous patients have now pursued enquiries with medical negligence firms regarding potential malpractice.

Jim Pearce, Assistant Chief Constable, confirmed that Hopper's hospital treatments did not involve any professional misconduct. However, considerable concern lingers among his former patients, many of whom underwent critical surgeries under Hopper’s care. Mike Bird, of Enable Law, called for an urgent public probe, reflecting the "shock and grave concern" engulfing those impacted.

In an unexpected personal sentiment, patient Jason Abbot expressed surprise at the conviction, recalling Hopper as supportive during his own surgical journey in 2022. Despite the scandal, Abbot voiced confidence in the care he received.

The Crown Prosecution Service is moving to reclaim Hopper's fraudulent earnings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2022, shedding light on the financial dimensions of his wrongdoing. Though Hopper's motivations remain perplexing, this unsettling case sends a loud warning regarding the ethical boundaries expected of medical professionals.

Judge ruled he didn't have a leg to stand on.....

There's an entire cannibal scene on the Internet for anyone motivated enough to search for it. Di*k 'n' fries - yes, some even eat their own tackle.

I suspect you won't find any menus on Google.

There are weirdos in the first-world. Other articles on this are even more graphic. What's amazing is that he's a doctor who must have seen his fir share of amputations. I've assisted--it ain't pretty.

Masochism personified, by the sound of things.

Reminds me of the man who ate his own penis.

he should have changed his name after the 2nd amputation.

Cutting off his nose to spite his face would have been a better course of action, wouldn't hamper his mobility.  Now he's a cripple, the dumb _ss.  This is Calcutta beggar stuff.  Now he needs to procure a permanent begging  spot outside the railway station.

Smart enough to be a surgeon but dumb enough to do this.

Since he's a Brit he could still start a gofundme

I'm just stumped about this.

Willingly hacking  own limb for money motive?
