UN nuclear chief urges Iran to resume inspections amid crisis

The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog has pressed Iran to swiftly allow renewed monitoring of its atomic program, warning that time is running out.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi told reporters in Vienna on Monday, “There’s still time, but not much,” as he urged Tehran to restore cooperation with inspectors.

Iran suspended IAEA access to its key nuclear sites after Israeli and US airstrikes in June damaged facilities. Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, focusing on over 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to nearly weapons-grade level. The IAEA says Iran has yet to disclose where the material is stored or in what condition it remains following the attacks.

Grossi confirmed that Tehran had missed mandatory reporting deadlines, fueling concerns among Western diplomats that Iran is withholding information out of fear Israel could exploit it to justify future strikes. Despite setbacks, Grossi reported progress in talks and expressed hope a deal could be reached “within days,” potentially opening the door to wider diplomatic efforts.

Egypt announced that Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atti will host a meeting Tuesday in Cairo with Grossi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Cairo described the talks as part of efforts to “pave the way for the resumption of negotiations.”

European powers Germany, France, and the UK warned last month they could push for the reimposition of UN sanctions unless Iran resumes nuclear negotiations. However, Tehran has recently sent more conciliatory signals. In an open letter published in The Guardian, Araghchi said Iran is prepared for a “realistic and lasting bargain” involving strict oversight and curbs on enrichment in exchange for lifting sanctions.

Key Takeaways:

  • IAEA chief Rafael Grossi urged Iran to resume nuclear inspections quickly.

  • Concerns mount over 400 kg of uranium enriched near weapons-grade.

  • Egypt to host talks as EU powers warn of possible UN sanctions.
