Nepal’s political landscape is in turmoil as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigns following violent protests over a social media ban and corruption. These youth-led demonstrations, marked by tragedy, have resulted in at least 22 deaths and hundreds injured. Security forces reportedly used extreme measures, including live rounds and tear gas, leading to heightened unrest across the country.

The small Himalayan nation, with a history of volatile politics, abolished its monarchy and became a republic in 2008. Since then, it has experienced frequent government changes. The current protests, spearheaded by Generation Z individuals, represent the most severe unrest Nepal has seen in decades.

President Ramchandra Paudel has called for dialogue, urging Gen Z protesters to engage in peaceful talks.

Despite a curfew in Kathmandu, demonstrators continued their defiance, damaging property and clashing with police. The political turmoil has also led to disruptions, such as the closure of the international airport.

With rampant corruption and economic challenges fuelling their grievances, Nepal's youths are demanding change.

Widespread anger erupted when the government blocked major social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, under the guise of combating fake news. Protesters argue this move stifles free speech and reflects broader frustrations over limited economic opportunities. Nepal's youth unemployment rate stood at a concerning 20.8% in 2024, reflecting broader economic struggles.

The situation escalated when officers and protesters clashed violently, resulting in numerous casualties. The international community, including the UN, condemned excessive force and called for investigations into police actions. While other government officials have resigned, calls for an interim administration are increasing.

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Oli, efforts are underway to form a new government. Interim leadership talks are happening, with potential involvement from Gen Z organisations. The road ahead remains uncertain, as Nepal seeks stability and reform in the face of ongoing tensions.
