Russia's War Drills in Belarus Rattle NATO Neighbours

Russia demonstrated its military prowess with large-scale exercises in Belarus, causing alarm among neighbouring NATO countries. The drills, involving around 7,000 troops, follow heightened tensions since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with exercises also occurring in Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and the Baltic and Barents seas.

The Borisovsky Training Ground in Belarus witnessed an impressive display of coordinated military might. Russian and Belarusian forces simulated a battle using aircraft, tanks, and artillery. The inclusion of drones reflects changes influenced by the conflict in Ukraine. Recent Russian drone actions over Poland have escalated tensions, leading Poland to close its borders with Belarus and boost its military presence to 40,000 troops.

People view the Zapad exercises, which traditionally focused on defending Belarus against a hypothetical Western attack, with suspicion. Despite the diminished scale due to Russia's ongoing war efforts, they prominently feature nuclear capabilities and new missile technologies. The U.S.-Belarus relationship shows tentative signs of improvement, having announced the lifting of sanctions on Belarus and plans to reopen its embassy in Minsk. This détente has sparked mixed reactions amidst ongoing military manoeuvres.

Looking ahead, the potential for Russia's exercises to influence diplomatic efforts remains uncertain. The Kremlin, through its spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, emphasised that these activities are not aggressive but necessary for strengthening alliances. NATO observers, including the U.S. and Hungary, were present, although tensions over recent incidents such as drone incursions persist.

Key Takeaways:

  • Over 7,000 troops conduct significant military exercises in Belarus.
  • Recent drone incursions into NATO airspace increase regional tensions.
  • U.S.-Belarusian relations show early signs of warming amidst complex geopolitical activity.

Since Russia can't demonstrate its military prowess in Ukraine, there is always Belarus.

Just reinforces Europes need to rearm rapidly should be perfectly clear putin intends to continue with Ukraine then I’m sure he will pick a little one next like Latvia or similar.

Yes, Europe needs to have sufficient defensive capabilities on its own, and America can't fix the "world's" problems. The issue with Latvia (and many other countries bordering Russia) is that it is a NATO member, and the US (rightfully) has a treaty obligation to come to Latvia's defense, should that country be attacked. Latvia sent troops to Afghanistan after the US was attacked on 9/11. I think Putin may be testing a little here and there with drone incursions and war games, but he knows very well that it would be suicidal to directly attack a NATO member.
