Rising Costs Hurt Thailand's Tourist Numbers

Featured Replies

If they do start closing bars at midnight, there will be a drop in tourism, as many more younger people are coming here these days

Time to double prices to make good for the shortfall... 😆

Great! How about people who couldn't work during the pandemic; should they maybe ask for 100% or 200% salary increases now to 'recuperate losses'? S**t happens when you run a business, so why insist o

  • People would still come if the attractions were worth the money, truth is other countries have more to offer than Pattaya, Phuket, Samui and Chiang Mai. All outdated and looking as if no changes

Yes, esp. their preferred target group, the Chinese; travelling to Vietnam and Japan instead... 😆

Chinese  tourists other than the super rich, are often quite cost and budget conscious and  thrifty.

While in Thailand,  I frequently see them carry own canteen with tea they made themselves, instead of buying soft drinks  with too much sugar.

Well, some who are in charge don't seem to consider that. 😆

One significance noted here; lack of foresight.

Unable to predict any future.

Often living in the state of Permanent Present Tense.

These things are not avoidable. they are fact of how things really are. Do you not think the government has not tried to cover up a lot of the misgivings happening all around Thailand to the world. Thailand thrives on social media, the tourists that do come also post the bad things happening in Thailand. This and the high value of the Thai baht is what is driving people to seek another tourist place. Thailand also has a problem with upgrading what tourists can do. They do not improve and remain stagnant, hoping more tourists will come see and do the same things they did before. Should hotels drive up their prices, they will surely lose numbers on people staying there.

Vietnam has opened up and is generating things to do for their tourism to increase. Thailand does stupid things like offering a free plane ticket to another city if you can show them you flew in from another country.  After the fact that and knowing you would never use that ticket in their time limit of their pre-planned stay in Thailand. It is laughable, especially when everything is said and done to deliberately reduce tourists numbers. Rather than increase them as they always say they are trying to do.

Because it is how they are doesnt mean that they cannot be corrected because mostly they can be and if not at the least improved on!! The 5 star hotels are continually raising their rates and given the strength of the Baht this compounds the cost for overseas tourists. Its not rocket science and is avoidable!!

Should the heading be "Rising Greed Hurt Thailand's Tourist Numbers"?

Wage costs have hardly moved in recent times; news reports from the government suggest Thailand is experiencing deflation; the Thai Baht is increasing relative to many currencies, so the cost of imports should declining, ceteris paribus (a Latin term used in economics meaning all other things constant).
