Trump’s Push to Retake Afghan Base from Taliban Revealed

President Donald Trump has been making efforts to regain control of Bagram Air Base from the Taliban for several months, sources told CNN. Trump mentioned these efforts publicly during a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressing his administration’s goal of reclaiming the base, which has been under Taliban control following the US military withdrawal in 2021.

“We gave it to (the Taliban) for nothing,” Trump stated, emphasising the ongoing attempts to regain control. Sources revealed that discussions about the base's strategic importance began as early as March. Trump and his national security team see Bagram as essential for monitoring China, accessing rare earth minerals, countering terrorism, and potentially reopening a diplomatic facility. However, such plans would require US military presence, conflicting with a 2020 agreement made during Trump's first term that called for a full US withdrawal.

The specifics of any current negotiations with the Taliban about the airfield are unclear, though Trump suggested the US holds some leverage. “We’re trying to get it back because (the Taliban) need things from us,” he explained, highlighting the strategic importance of the base’s location near China’s missile development sites, a point Trump reiterated from a previous statement in March.

Bagram Air Base was a central hub of US military operations in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, used for missions across the country and visited by Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Trump himself. Numerous Taliban attacks over the years targeted the base, which held an iconic status in the US military presence in Afghanistan.

When US troops withdrew in July 2021, they transported nearly 900 C-17 cargo loads and destroyed 16,000 pieces of equipment, according to US Central Command. A 2023 State Department review later suggested that leaving Bagram may have contributed to the chaotic US exit, as it left Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul as the sole evacuation route.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump pushes to retake Bagram Air Base from the Taliban.
  • Discussions date back to March, citing strategic importance.
  • The US withdrawal agreement complicates potential military presence.

"“We gave it to (the Taliban) for nothing,” Trump stated" That is what happens when your side loses. Duh.

At least this time he used term 'we', rather than 'Biden'.... 'we' would include Trump, who made the disastrous agreement on withdrawal of US during his first term.

I'm sure the Taliban will be very open to having a US Base in Afghanistan.  Ahem...

The Australian prime minister is certainly on the side of the Taliban

I'm sure some of the prominent MAGA members on here can remind us who gave it away for nothing.

Who was President when this was lost?  Gave them all that equipment.  The fiasco caused 13 military live and how many people were left behind to be tortured and killed.  Biden always on the wrong side of history.

As the golden opportunity for further bonus giveaway, after US military left at least $7billion worth of weapons/equipment when they withdrew.

Afghanistan has always been known as the

Graveyard of the Empires.

Actually, most of it had been provided to the Afghan government's army, and seized by the Taliban when it collapsed, not directly abandoned by the US army.

Maybe Trump's Department of War will invade Afghanistan to recover the base.

Trump foreign policy is give and take.

The Afghan government only collapsed because of 45th POTUS Trump's peace plan to hand the country over to the Taliban which required immediate US withdrawal of all armed forces from Afghanistan. There was no plan to extract military facilities and hardware from the country.

In exchange the terrorist organization Taliban agreed to fight terrorist organizations in Afghanistan.  The Art of a Deal!

Just another,in a long list of countries that import Muslims who live on welfare for the rest of their lives.

What use are these people to their new country?

Maybe he just saw the film The Man Who Would be King and it gave him some ideas . . .

Trump is the one who made the deal and conditions that made all this happen. The best Biden could do was delay implementation a couple months. Biden was given a poisoned cup: America was totally sick of Afghan war that had dragged on seemingly forever.

I don’t suppose Trump bothered to tell anyone what precisely it is the Taliban need that they can’t get from Chi-na.

Trump threatens ‘bad things’ for Afghanistan in dispute over airbase

“If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!” Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday evening.

Bagram Air Base was originally built by the Soviet Union in the 1950s. It later became a significant military base for the United States after the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001.

TACO!

I now recall the same happened  there when previous USSR-backed govt crumbled in 1992; all of the Soviet-provided hardwares  fell into the hands of Mujahideen(later Taliban).

As many of their govt troops joined them.

A good example of the repeating history in one same region.
