Starmer’s Small Boats Plan not working as 200 Cross, 2 Deported

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s new small boats strategy is facing heavy criticism after hundreds of migrants crossed the English Channel in a single day while only two were deported under his flagship returns deal with France.

The government announced the plan earlier this week, promising a “one in, one out” system where a small number of Channel arrivals would be sent back to France while legitimate applicants would be admitted to Britain. Officials framed it as an “immediate deterrent.”

However, the rollout quickly ran into problems. On the first day, just one Indian migrant was returned. The following day, an Eritrean man was flown to Paris under escort by three Home Office officials, despite a costly failed legal challenge to block his removal. Meanwhile, at least 200 new migrants are thought to have arrived on British shores the same day, with estimates suggesting the true number could be higher.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy hailed the deportations as a “milestone” and insisted they signaled the government’s determination to send back those with no right to remain. Yet opposition figures dismissed the policy as ineffective. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp argued the scheme was “pathetic” and warned that sending back only a handful of people while tens of thousands continue to arrive would have “no deterrent effect whatsoever.”

Since Labour’s election win in July 2024, more than 54,000 migrants have entered the UK by small boat. Critics warn that unless the government can rapidly scale up removals, the returns agreement risks becoming symbolic rather than practical.

The dispute highlights the mounting pressure on Starmer’s administration to deliver results on one of the most politically charged issues facing Britain.

Key Takeaways

  • Hundreds still crossing: At least 200 migrants arrived in one day.

  • Tiny removals: Only two migrants deported so far under the new deal.

  • Criticism grows: Opponents call the scheme weak and ineffective.
