A tragic speedboat collision in Battambang province has left one teenager dead and two others injured, prompting a police investigation after both boat operators fled the scene.

The incident occurred at 4:57pm on 22 September in Anlong Ta Aur village, Koh Chiwang commune, Ek Phnom district. According to local authorities, the crash involved two speedboats and resulted in the death of 16-year-old Yet Sophea, a resident of Reach Daun Keo village. Two others were injured: Yet Chanthou, 20, from the same village, and Heng Yang Nheu, 15, a Vietnamese national living in nearby Prek Trap.

Witnesses reported that the boats collided at high speed, throwing passengers into the water. Shockingly, both drivers abandoned their vessels and fled, leaving victims behind. Police have since impounded the boats and stored them at the Koh Chiwang Water Traffic Office for further examination.

Local officials have launched a manhunt for the operators and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident has reignited concerns over unregulated water traffic and the lack of safety enforcement on Cambodia’s inland waterways.

As families mourn and survivors recover, questions remain about accountability and the urgent need for stricter oversight to prevent future tragedies.
