In an unsettling case that has gripped Japan, a 75-year-old woman, Keiko Mori, was arrested after allegedly admitting to police that she stored her daughter's body in a freezer for two decades. The shocking discovery was made by investigators at Mori's residence in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo. Authorities have identified the remains as those of Makiko, who was born in 1975 and would be approaching 50 today.

The grisly find was reported to police by Mori herself, who appeared at the station with a relative. During the investigation, officers found Makiko’s body in a deep freezer, dressed in a T-shirt and underwear, kneeling face-down. As decomposition had set in, an autopsy is planned to establish the cause of death, officials said.

Authorities arrested Mori on suspicion of abandoning a body. She allegedly told investigators that she bought the freezer to contain the smell permeating her home. Police remain tight-lipped about how many other children Mori has or what they might know concerning Makiko's situation. Her husband had recently passed away, leaving Mori living alone.

Experts believe this case underscores potential social challenges facing Japan’s elderly, who might struggle with isolation and managing traumatic incidents alone. The wider community is reacting with shock and concern, highlighting issues of mental health and elder support.

As police continue their investigation, they focus on shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Makiko’s death and the motivations behind her mother’s actions. The results of the autopsy are keenly awaited, which may provide further insights into this tragic event.

Key Takeaways:

  • A 75-year-old Japanese woman was arrested for keeping her daughter's body in a freezer for 20 years.
  • The body, identified as Makiko, was discovered in a deep freezer at their home in Ibaraki prefecture.
  • An autopsy is forthcoming to determine the cause of death as police continue their investigation.
