Mahmood Calls for Migrants to Prove Worth for UK Settlement

Migrants must prove their contribution to society to secure UK residency, announced Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, at the Labour conference. My proposals include that migrants learn English to a high standard, maintain a clean criminal record, and engage in community service in order to qualify for indefinite leave to remain. Labour's policy aims to distinguish itself from Reform UK's stance, which seeks to abolish such permissions entirely.

The backdrop to Mahmood’s announcement is the rising number of migrants crossing the English Channel and broader immigration challenges in the UK. Currently, migrants can gain indefinite leave to remain after five years; however, Labour proposes extending this period to ten years. Integrity is crucial, with emphasis on requirements like National Insurance contributions and community involvement.

Mahmood's speech intertwines her personal experiences with political objectives, sharing her family’s migration story and her motivation to address issues like shoplifting, which she faced as a child. She outlined a "winter of action" scheme to combat shoplifting with the cooperation of police and local businesses. Her remarks targeted voters potentially swayed by Reform UK's policies, aiming to present Labour as capable of managing immigration effectively.

Going forward, Labour plans to make the integration of migrants a condition for settlement, even proposing that those who contribute significantly may achieve residency sooner. This stance is supported by Migration Observatory's data, which shows significant numbers residing in the UK under indefinite leave to remain. Reform UK proposes replacing permanent status with renewable visas, prompting criticism from Labour, which deems the ideas harmful to long-term residents.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mahmood seeks to increase residency requirements for migrants in the UK.
  • The goal is to encourage integration through language and community roles.
  • Labour contrasts its immigration approach with Reform UK's more restrictive policies.

I already did on another thread.

She should join Reform

Ms Mahmood, meanwhile, used her first speech to conference as home secretary to dramatically redraw the immigration compact. She proposed raising the threshold for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) from five years to 10. Controversially, she also said successful applicants would be required to have no criminal record, speak English to a high standard, be in work, receive no benefits, and give back to their community. Contribution, it seems, would determine settlement.

The nasty, racist, little Englander that she is 😀😀

Where are the usual suspects 😀😀

Missing in action 😀😀

Copying Farage again.

Side note - she's a really scary looking woman. Demonic looking. Imagine her, Blair and Starmer in the same room. The stuff of nightmares.

Wouldn't it be better to get most of that sorted BEFORE they arrive?

Of course, they should also be held to high standards after they arrive and before they get residence status.

But the vetting should start long before.  You know...  When they apply for their visa.  Otherwise, you're just inviting in tens (hundreds?) of thousands of drains on the taxpayer.  Giving them false hope that's not going to end well once this stoopid chapter of woke history runs its course.  And it will.  We're already seeing the light at the end of a long tunnel.
