Jane Goodall, the pioneering primatologist, has passed away at age 91 from natural causes while on a US speaking tour, her institute confirmed on WednesDay. Her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees altered scientific views on primate behaviour and human-animal relations. Goodall's research demonstrated emotional and cognitive parallels between humans and chimpanzees, sparking a revolution in ethology.

Goodall's journey began in 1960 when she arrived at Tanzania’s Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve under the guidance of anthropologist Louis Leakey. Despite lacking a formal degree, her revolutionary observations and method of integrating with chimpanzee communities redefined primate studies. Her detailed documentation showed chimpanzees using tools, a behaviour then considered exclusive to humans, challenging established norms in the scientific community.

Her discoveries faced initial criticism for their unconventional approach, including giving chimpanzees names instead of numbers. However, her findings laid the foundation for future studies and earned her global recognition. Throughout her career, Goodall received many honours, such as being appointed Dame of the British Empire and a UN Messenger of Peace, highlighting her lasting impact on both science and conservation.

Looking forward, Goodall's legacy continues to influence primate research and conservation efforts worldwide. Her institute remains dedicated to promoting her vision of environmental protection and awareness. Well-known organisations and the United Nations have expressed their condolences, reiterating her contributions to understanding and preserving the natural world.

Key Takeaways:

  • Jane Goodall, at age 91, died of natural causes in California.
  • Her work with chimpanzees pioneered primate behavioural studies.
  • She left a profound impact on science and environmental conservation.

A few photos of her life. Gorgeous looking woman in her youth.

Missed by many, I'm sure.

She said: "I’m not going to give in. I’ll die fighting, that’s for sure.”

Very well said. A truly lovely lady.

I had the privilege to see a lecture and journalist-led interview with her at a theatre in Wellington (NZ) in 2017.  She simply talked so much common sense on all of the topics that were raised.  RIP.
