ANALYSIS

Keir Starmer has rapidly become the UK's most unpopular prime minister, according to new polling. Just 13% of voters are satisfied with Starmer, while 79% are dissatisfied, says pollster Ipsos. Despite Labour's historic win with the largest majority in Parliament last year, Starmer's support has plummeted dramatically over his 15 months in office.

Labour's massive electoral victory came with just one-third of the votes cast, highlighting Britain’s skewed electoral system. John Curtice, a respected polling expert, points out that only one in five Britons actually voted for Labour. Recent surveys show Labour’s support has dwindled to about 20%, starkly contrasted by Reform UK’s rise to 35% under Nigel Farage.

The Labour Party is grappling with its electoral downturn at its annual conference in Liverpool. Members are concerned about the public's fading patience for Labour and Starmer’s unclear political identity. Critics argue Starmer never established a clear vision, leading to voter confusion and dissatisfaction with his leadership.

Former Labour MP Chris Mullin contends that the Conservatives' tax cuts before the election lured Labour into a trap. Starmer was then forced to rule out income tax increases, limiting revenue options. This misstep, according to Mullin, led to political manoeuvring that damaged Labour’s reputation and financial standing.

Farage's rise brings a stark contrast to Starmer's more reserved approach. While Labour struggles to address issues like illegal immigration, Farage’s bold tactics have resonated with disenchanted voters. Labour has toughened its immigration stance, yet critics accuse Starmer of mimicking Farage’s rhetoric, risking alienation of Labour’s traditional base.

A recent anti-immigration march saw some 100,000 protesters, reflecting a heated national debate. At Labour's conference, Starmer called for choosing “decency” over “division.” The challenge remains for Labour to distinguish itself from Reform UK while addressing immigration effectively.

Looking forward, Labour aims for long-term national renewal over a decade. With initiatives like building 1.5 million homes and defence spending boosts, the government hopes to restore public confidence. However, the timeline risks clashing with public impatience for immediate change amid economic uncertainties.

Key Takeaways:

  • Keir Starmer is now the most unpopular UK prime minister ever, according to Ipsos.
  • Labour's popular support has fallen significantly, with Nigel Farage's Reform UK surging.
  • Labour’s strategy for national renewal faces challenges against public demand for faster change.

Starmer is loathed. He is a vile tyrant and the British people have woken up to the fact. He should resign but like most tyrants he will stay to the bitter end.

As expected! In the so called "Western democracies" each new leader will be even more disappointing than his predecessor. Every new leader will betray the electorate even more by breaking even more promises made before an election than his lying predecessor.

Democracy? My ass!

The British people have never voted for more immigration. To the contrary, governments have been elected on a ticket of reducing it yet look where we have ended up.

This is not Democracy. It is tyranny.

I think kamala would have been better than this guy..

I always see Starmer as Charlie Brown. Well meaning but with no clue and no ability to lead.

The party can ask him to withdraw as leader and appoint someone else.

The UK needs a good solid socialist leader like Jeremy Corbin. He's friends with terrorists in Palestine, Left Wing Governments all over the world, and will totally destroy any economy left in Britain. It's scary to think these people get close to the reins of power.

I agree but Corbyn had his chance and although he achieved an impressive proportion of the overall vote, he won't be in power.

That said, if there's a hung parliament in 2029, his new party might have some sway!

Guy is an NPC..in almost every photo he has this "Am I really the prime minister ?" look.

He is ball-less and direction-less and cannot stop the flood of opportunists walking right in the country as though it has has no border.
