The popular Spanish resort of Benidorm is clamping down on shops displaying lewd items in their windows. Local authorities are concerned that such displays could damage the area’s reputation and offend passers-by.or its vibrant tourist traffic, Benidorm’s crackdown is mainly focused on the "Guiri zone" which caters predominantly to British tourists.

Products with sexual messages, often advertised in English, have raised alarms among city officials. Javier Jordá, head of commerce in Benidorm's city hall, stated that this action aims to protect minors and vulnerable communities from offensive messages in public spaces. Recent inspections revealed that some commercial activities contradict the town’s regulations, which forbid displaying items that could hurt moral sensitivities in shop windows.

Benidorm, nestled along Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast, remains a top draw for visitors, attracting nearly three million tourists last year alone, including over 830,000 from Britain. Local laws specify that shop windows should not display items like "sexy articles," although these items can be sold inside. The authorities are urging shop owners to comply voluntarily, with fines up to €3,000 (approximately 112,000 Thai baht) for non-compliance.

Jordá emphasised that they hope voluntary action will suffice, but maintaining the city's respectable image remains a priority. Last year, Spain welcomed an all-time high of 94 million foreign visitors, led by the UK, France, and Germany. However, concerns about over-tourism have prompted shifts in strategies, as seen with this crackdown.

As the summer season approaches, Benidorm's authorities remain vigilant in balancing tourism with community standards. Efforts to ensure shops comply are ongoing, with reminders and potential penalties as tools to maintain a family-friendly environment.

Key Takeaways

  • Benidorm is targeting shops displaying offensive material in windows.
  • The crackdown aims to protect minors and maintain the city’s image.
  • Non-compliant shops could face fines up to €3,000 (112,000 Thai baht).

What’s the point of going abroad if you’re just another tourist carted around in buses surrounded by sweaty mindless oafs from Kettering and Coventry in their cloth caps and their cardigans and their transistor radios and their Sunday Mirrors, complaining about the tea — “Oh they don’t make it properly here, do they, not like at home” — and stopping at Majorcan bodegas selling fish and chips and Watney’s Red Barrel and calamares and two-veg and sitting in their cotton frocks squirting Timothy White’s suncream all over their puffy raw swollen purulent flesh ‘cos they “overdid it on the first day.” And being herded into endless Hotel Miramars and Bellvueses and Continentals with their modern international luxury roomettes and draught Red Barrel and swimming pools full of fat German businessmen pretending they’re acrobats forming pyramids and frightening the children and barging into queues and if you’re not at your table spot on seven you miss the bowl of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup, the first item on the menu of International Cuisine, and every Thursday night the hotel has a bloody cabaret in the bar, featuring a tiny emaciated dago with nine-inch hips and some bloated fat tart with her hair brylcreemed down and a big arse presenting “Flamenco for Foreigners.” And adenoidal typists from Birmingham with flabby white legs and diarrhea trying to pick up hairy bandy-legged wop waiters called Manuel and once a week there’s an excursion to the local Roman remains to buy cherryade and melted ice cream and bleeding Watney’s Red Barrel and one evening you visit the so called typical restaurant with local color and atmosphere and you sit next to a party from Rhyl who keep singing “Torremolinos, torremolinos” and complaining about the food

Could be a story from Thailand's prime family beach resort, Pattaya.

I think the "reputation" is beyond repair in both cases.
