A 38-year-old Indian national, identified as Mr. Tanuj, has been arrested by immigration police in Phuket for overstaying his visa by 107 days. Upon receiving a complaint about a foreigner overstaying at a condominium in the Kathu subdistrict, officers located Mr. Tanuj in the building's lobby. He admitted to the overstay, claiming his love for Thailand was the reason for not returning home.

Mr. Tanuj’s passport revealed no attempts to extend his visa or exit Thailand after its expiration. As a result, he was charged with staying in the country beyond his permit and subsequently transferred to Kamala Police Station. Authorities are considering adding him to the immigration blacklist ahead of his deportation.

This arrest is part of a broader initiative led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanumart Boonlak, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau. The bureau is focusing on foreign nationals engaged in illegal activities such as unauthorized work, transnational crime, and nominee shareholding schemes. These measures aim to eliminate unfair competition in tourism, enhance tourist safety, and maintain visitor confidence in Phuket.

Looking ahead, the Thai authorities will continue their crackdown on immigration violators to safeguard the tourist sector and the local economy. The next steps include determining the legal consequences for Mr. Tanuj and potentially blacklisting him to prevent future entry into Thailand. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to immigration laws to avoid legal complications.

Key Takeaways

  • An Indian man overstayed in Thailand by 107 days, citing love for the country.
  • Authorities may blacklist him after charging him for overstaying.
  • The arrest is part of a crackdown on illegal foreign activities in Phuket.
