The Trump administration has begun firing federal workers, as announced by Russell Vought, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. This move comes over a week into the government shutdown, with Republicans seeking to pressure Democrats. The layoffs, known as reductions in force (RIF), began after federal funding lapsed on 1st October.

 

The exact number of federal workers affected remains unclear, but an OMB spokesperson indicated the layoffs would be substantial. Despite this, the White House blames congressional Democrats for the shutdown, though it is not mandatory to initiate layoffs when funding lapses. These layoffs are in addition to the usual furloughs that occur during a funding lapse.

 

Democratic Sen. Patty Murray has criticised the administration's decision, accusing Trump and Vought of choosing to cause further harm. Agencies such as Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Education have started issuing RIF notices. The layoffs allegedly target entities seen as misaligned with the Trump administration's goals, such as the Make America Healthy Again agenda.

 

The Trump administration initially promised swift layoffs but delayed the move due to political risks acknowledged by some Republican lawmakers. Federal employee unions are fighting back, labelling the layoffs as "disgraceful" and have initiated legal action. The American Federation of Government Employees, supported by Democracy Forward, is seeking to stop the measures in court.

 

Judge Susan Illston ordered OMB to update on the status and details of the RIF notices by Friday evening. Max Stier of the Partnership for Public Service stated that the shutdown does not grant extra authority for workforce downsizing and warned that these actions undermine federal efficiency.

I can't imagine what the unemployment numbers will look like at the end of the year but it seems the regime is going to have to bite the bullet. 

I wonder if the layoffs will result in the government having to recruit staff again later.

Perhaps you are unaware of this, but people who get good educations usually end up with good jobs, rather than low end jobs like janitor or truck driver.

 

You have absolutely no idea what all those Federal workers do, nor how the decisions are being made as to whom to fire. Like most willfully ignorant people, you just assume there's fat and RIF-able people. Or maybe to mask your own feelings of inadequacy for what you failed to gain from life, you take some sort of perverse pleasure when people's lives are thrown into disarray by random and poorly considered firings?

Fortunately, airports in Buffalo, New York; Charlotte, North Carolina; Cleveland, Ohio; Los Angeles, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon, are refusing to play the video.
