7-Year-Old Fatally Struck by Lightning in Mukdahan

A seven-year-old boy tragically died after being struck by lightning while playing under a tree in Ban Luean Charoen, Moo 4, Dong Luang subdistrict, Dong Luang district, Mukdahan province, at around 16:00 on 17 October 2015. The child, identified as Montakan, suffered severe burns to his clothing and body and rescue teams confirmed his death at the scene.

The incident occurred while Montakan was playing with five friends under a Krabok tree, in an area about one kilometre from his home. Relatives reported that there was no rain or thunderstorm at the time, only slightly overcast skies. Observers noted signs of the lightning strike on the tree branches and scattered wood debris near the child’s body.

Montakan’s grandfather, 56-year-old Mr. Jamlong, described seeing his grandson lying motionless with his clothes and hair burned. He immediately called emergency services and attempted first aid, but the child could not be saved. The boy’s family has since brought his body home to be cared for and prepare for funeral rites.

Authorities from local rescue and emergency services responded promptly to the scene. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the lightning strike are ongoing, with officials examining the site and surrounding area.
