Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the brazen theft of crown jewels from the Louvre museum in Paris, according to French reports. The men, hailing from Seine-Saint-Denis, were apprehended while one was attempting to board a flight at Charles de Gaulle Airport. This follows an audacious daytime heist where €88 million (3.4 billion Thai baht) worth of jewels was stolen.

The theft occurred last Sunday with four perpetrators using power tools to breach the world-renowned museum. France's justice minister has admitted serious lapses in security, portraying the country in a "terrible image." The suspects, known to police for past burglaries, were captured on Saturday evening and are now under investigation by specialist officers who can hold them for up to 96 hours.

The robbery unfolded shortly after the museum opened at 09:30 local time, with the thieves employing a vehicle-mounted lift to access a balcony. CCTV footage captured them entering through a window, threatening guards, and using power tools to cut open display cases. A report highlighted a third of the rooms raided lacked CCTV coverage, facilitating the four-minute inside job.

French authorities have intensified security measures throughout the country's cultural venues in response to this theft. The gang made their swift getaway on scooters waiting for them outside the museum. The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office has been contacted by the BBC for further information.

Key Takeaways:

  • Two men arrested over €88m ($102m) Louvre heist.
  • Thieves used power tools and a lift for the daring robbery.
  • Security flaws were exposed, leading to heightened safety measures.

Inside job.

I heard the woman in charge of the Louvre, the director, or whatever her title, has resigned.

I'd say she's now very wealthy

Guess they watched Lupin and thought they could do it like they did for a tv show. I’m sure there is more to the story, glad the two were caught.

For some reason I hope they all get away with it...:coffee1:

No problem. Send for 'Jewels' Maigret.

“What is it with the French and inflating their stories all the time? Laps of security paints a “terrible image” of France?!

It’s  not that serious, mate! If anyone is painted in a bad picture then it’s the people responsible for the lack of security and not the entire country!

Their intended destination was Algeria.

The heist sequence itself runs nearly a half hour and has no dialogue.

This French heist movie was the gold standard for the heist movies that were popular in the 1960s, like Topkapi and Gambit.
