Police in Mae Sot have taken a 28-year-old man into custody for slashing the throat of a young Myanmar woman during an attempted sexual assault in a public restroom behind the Mae Sot District Office. The suspect, Mr. Thammaphat, was brought to the scene on October 28, 2025, to reenact the crime under heavy police security. Authorities confirmed that the man had been released from prison only a few days before committing the attack.

The assault occurred when the suspect reportedly hid near the women’s restroom, waiting for a victim. He attacked Ms. Iiphiw, aged 21, as she entered, slashing her throat with a knife in an apparent attempt to subdue her. The victim managed to escape the restroom despite her severe injuries, crawling to a nearby shop to seek help as blood poured from her wound.

Good Samaritans rushed to assist and took her to Mae Sot Hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) under close medical supervision. Police later arrested the suspect and charged him with attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon in a public place.

Investigations revealed that the accused has a long criminal history, including a 2019 conviction for rape, attempted assault, theft and burglary. He had been released from prison on August 27, 2025, after serving his sentence. Following his release, he lived briefly with his mother in Huai Hin Fon Village, Mae Pa Subdistrict, before leaving home on October 1 without disclosing his whereabouts. His mother reportedly had no contact with him until news of the new attack emerged.

Police said the reenactment was conducted to confirm the suspect’s confession and reconstruct the events leading to the assault. Officers are continuing to investigate the motive and whether the suspect had targeted other potential victims in the area.

Authorities assured that the case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, with ongoing attention to the victim’s recovery and safety.

I guess life in prison was better than out of it. To commit such a crime so soon after his release from prison in such a common area suggest his wanting to return. Sad he did this by attacking some poor woman. I do hope she recovers from the incident.

There are no safety measures for such a horrid act that can be implemented.
