Phnom Penh Airport Bus Offers Budget-Friendly Travel Option

Foreign travellers arriving at Cambodia’s new Techo International Airport are discovering a surprisingly comfortable alternative to pricey taxis: the city’s public Airport Express Bus, now hailed as a game-changer for budget-conscious visitors.

Running from 5.30am to 11.30pm, the air-conditioned service connects the airport to central Phnom Penh for just 1,500 riel (around $0.37), compared to the $15–25 typically charged by taxis. The circular route begins at Kouch Kanong Circle Bus Station and stops at key city locations including Canadia Garden, RULE, BRED Bank and AEON Mall Meanchey.

For Sok Kheng, a Phnom Penh resident, the bus offers more than savings. “It may take longer than a car, but the price difference makes it worthwhile,” she said, noting that with good time management, the three-hour journey is manageable.

American traveller Jeremy Miller, who frequently visits family in Cambodia, was impressed by the comfort and value. “It’s quite interesting to spend 1,500 riels and take around an hour from the city with a comfortable seat and air conditioning,” he said, though he hopes for future rail links to ease airport access.

The bus has also become a daily fixture for locals like Sam Sophat, a souvenir vendor, who praised its environmental benefits and cost savings. However, he noted that peak-hour congestion can be stressful and suggested early morning or afternoon travel for a smoother ride.

While most passengers appreciate the service, some call for improvements. Sophat advocates for more routes and noise regulations, saying, “We need a silent area on the bus because many people talk loudly when others are trying to relax.”

Irna, a long-term American resident, echoed the sentiment. “It wasn’t full, and the buses were on time and affordable,” she said, recommending clearer signage to help newcomers navigate the system.

For foreign travellers seeking a low-cost, authentic way to reach the city, Phnom Penh’s airport bus offers not just savings, but a shared experience with locals—one that’s increasingly popular and quietly reshaping the city’s transport culture.
