Thai authorities have helped rescue a 29-year-old Malaysian woman who was held captive for three years in a Myanmar-based scam operation. The woman, identified only as Miss Lam, was freed on October 29, 2025, after a cross-border effort led by Thailand’s Technology Crime Suppression Center and The Mirror Foundation. The victim had been trafficked from Malaysia in 2022 after responding to a fake job posting online.

The rescue began when Miss Lam’s family contacted The Mirror Foundation on October 27, reporting that she was being held in Tachilek, Myanmar, near Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province. Thai officials swiftly coordinated with Myanmar authorities to secure her release. At 09:30 on October 29, immigration officials in Chiang Rai confirmed that she had safely entered Thai territory and had voluntarily surrendered herself.

Miss Lam recounted that she had been tricked by a fraudulent Facebook job offer for a waitress position in Singapore. Instead of being taken to Singapore, she was abducted in March 2022, transported through Thailand’s Mae Sot District in Tak Province, and smuggled into Myanmar. There, she was confined to a compound in KK Park in Myawaddy, an area notorious for online scam operations.

During her captivity, she endured physical abuse and forced labor. She was beaten repeatedly with water pipes whenever she failed to deceive victims in online investment scams. Later, she was sold to another operation, Huanya Park and subsequently relocated to a remote site before ending up in Tachilek. In mid-2025, her captors demanded a ransom of about 200,000 baht from her family.

Following negotiations, Myanmar military personnel transported Miss Lam across the Mekong River into Thailand between 04:00 and 05:00 on October 29. Thai immigration officers took her into protective custody in Chiang Rai. Authorities confirmed she would undergo victim screening under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, supported by psychologists and social workers.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwphan of the Technology Crime Suppression Center stated that the screening process typically lasts between one and fifteen days, depending on the victim’s condition. As a human trafficking victim, Miss Lam will receive support and protection while the Malaysian Embassy arranges for her repatriation.
