Cambodia’s $2bn Airport Faces Turbulence Despite Peace Deal

Cambodia’s Techo International Airport (TIA), a $2 billion China-built mega-project, has opened its doors amid falling tourist numbers and lingering regional tensions—casting doubt on its role as a gateway to economic revival.

The airport’s inauguration on 20 October by Prime Minister Hun Manet was meant to signal a new era of growth, anchored by the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords signed earlier this year. Brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, the deal ended deadly border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand and promised regional calm. But early signs suggest peace alone may not be enough to lift Cambodia’s tourism sector.

TIA, designed by British firm Foster + Partners and built by China State Construction, boasts an initial capacity of 15 million passengers, with ambitions to triple that by 2050. Yet the runway to success looks shaky. Tourist arrivals dropped 5.6% in the first eight months of 2025 compared to last year, with August seeing a dramatic 38.4% plunge following July’s border violence. Thai visitors—Cambodia’s largest tourist group—fell by over 28%.

Further complicating matters, South Korea issued a “code black” travel warning after a student was tortured and killed in Cambodia in August. The incident, coupled with growing concerns over scams targeting foreigners, has dented Cambodia’s image as a safe destination.

Despite these setbacks, officials remain hopeful. “I’m confident that the TIA will become a catalyst for Cambodia’s economic and tourism growth,” Hun Manet said at the launch. Trump echoed optimism at the peace accord signing, calling it a step toward “forging a future for the region.”

But the stakes are high. Cambodia’s economic strategy hinges on tourism, and TIA is central to that vision. Without sustained peace and improved safety, the airport risks becoming a costly symbol of ambition rather than a driver of prosperity.

For now, the focus shifts to rebuilding trust—both regionally and among wary travellers. Whether TIA can deliver on its promise will depend not just on infrastructure, but on the political and social stability that surrounds it.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

As far as I understand it the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia was brokered by Malaysia and ASEAN.

Trump and the USA had absolutely nothing to do with it at all,

Trump just FI ed in, did a silly dance, signed a piece of paper, and FO ed out again, saying

look at me, look at me, I'm a peace broker.

Where is my Nobel Peace prize?

You are misinformed. I'm not Trump fan, but no one, anywhere, cares about what Malaysia has to say about anything whatsoever. No Trump, no peace deal. Dirtbag that he is, he did good on that issue.

It is an ASEAN problem and nothing at all to do with the USA or Trump.

Far more people in ASEAN dare about Malaysia than care about the USA. Probably more people in ASEAN care more about China than the USA.

Clearly, it's a problem that ASEAN could not handle. It was finally stabilized by Trump. And sorry, ASEAN states don't care about Malaysia -particularly their neighbors, Thailand and Indonesia and Singapore (which just laughs at Malaysia). Can ASEAN/Malaysia handle the Myanmar civil war? If you think so you really don't have a grasp. Trump won't touch it because it's a lost cause. But come on, ASEAN, tackle Myanmar. Let's see you do it. Not a chance.

And that us your best opinion?

So please tell us all exactly what Trump did to make a "peace deal".

While you are at t please explain why Trump did not sort out the real internal war in Myanmar.

After all it must be so easy to do for a person who has halted so many wars.

Is it 7, 8 or 9 he has stopped now, by his own count?

It's a nice and well-run airport, I hope it will live up to its potential, eventually.
