This marks a slight increase from 49% in June to 50% in September. The survey, with a margin of error of ±3, involved 1,500 face-to-face interviews across various regions. The rise in self-rated poverty (SRP) can be attributed to regional shifts. In Metro Manila, SRP increased to 43% from 36%, while it rose to 42% from 38% in Balance Luzon. In Visayas, SRP slightly dropped to 54% from 60%, and Mindanao remained unchanged at 69%. Furthermore, 5.7% of families are considered "newly poor," as they reported becoming poor within the last one to four years. The survey also indicated stability in self-rated food poverty, which remained at 41% since April. In September, 10% of families were considered borderline food poor, while 47% did not consider themselves food poor. Notable shifts in food poverty perceptions were observed regionally, with Metro Manila increasing to 35% from 31% and Mindanao rising to 61% from 60%. Expert analysis suggests that economic and regional factors contribute to these changes, reflecting the shifting perceptions of poverty. The SWS report hints at ongoing economic challenges faced by many families, with significant disparities observed between urban and rural areas. This perception may influence policy direction and social welfare initiatives. Looking forward, the survey results are likely to play a role in shaping government strategies aimed at poverty alleviation. Analysts anticipate increased focus on creating inclusive economic opportunities and addressing regional disparities. Policymakers may also prioritize food security initiatives given the unchanged food poverty rates. Key Takeaways 50% of Filipino families now consider themselves poor. Self-rated food poverty remains at 41% nationally. Shifts in poverty perception vary significantly by region. Click here for more Philippines stories Adapted by ASEAN Now from PhilStar 2025-10-31
