The Israeli military's former top lawyer has been arrested amid a political storm over a leaked video allegedly depicting the abuse of a Palestinian detainee. Maj Gen Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who resigned as the Military Advocate General of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) last week, has taken responsibility for the leak. The controversy escalated when she was reported missing, leading to a beach search north of Tel Aviv where police subsequently found her.

The video, aired on an Israeli news channel in August 2024, reveals alleged abuse at the Sde Teiman military base. Reserve soldiers are seen taking a detainee aside, obscuring visibility with riot shields, allegedly beating him and stabbing him with a sharp object. Five reservists face charges of aggravated abuse and causing serious bodily harm, although they deny the allegations and have remained unnamed.

Four of the accused appeared with lawyers at a Supreme Court news conference in Jerusalem, wearing black balaclavas to conceal their identities. Lawyer Adi Keidar criticised the legal process, claiming it to be biased and flawed. The detainee involved was part of a prisoner exchange with Hamas, released to Gaza in October.

The fallout led to a criminal investigation into the video's leak, with Gen Tomer-Yerushalmi placed on leave and subsequently resigning. She stated her actions aimed to counter false propaganda against the army's law enforcement. Defence Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both condemned her conduct, citing significant damage to Israel's public relations.

The incident has highlighted political divisions within Israel: right-wing figures view the leak as defamation of the military, while the left sees it as a valid exposure of abuse, supporting previous reports since October 2023. A UN report last year accused Israel of widespread abuses of detainees; however, Israel denies such claims, asserting compliance with international legal standards and thorough investigation of complaints.

Wouldn't it be better to focus on the abuse of detainees by soldiers instead of going after a whistleblower?

Absolutely, only cowards and the guilty go after whistleblowers.....................🤔

The ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) has been denied access to Palestinian prisoners, in contravention of international law. So whistleblowers are needed.

She should be nominated for the Nobel peace prize instead of this monster.

Not one soldier who killed the rescue workers and buried their ambulances, lied about them having lights off, and being terrorists have been reprimanded, it’s a terrorist state run by monsters like Smotrich, Ben Gvir, and of course the wanted war criminal Netanyahu.

The USA has allowed Israel to do anything it likes.

Are you living on another planet?

Israel is despised across the world and that is only going to get worse when other journalists are allowed into Gaza.

Israel has a reputation not to be messed with like Trump has a reputation for stopping 8 wars.
