Algerian Man Mistakenly Freed from Wandsworth Prison Arrested

An Algerian sex offender mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in south London, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, was arrested in the Finsbury Park area. A member of the public found Kaddour-Cherif, 24, just before 11:30 GMT on Friday. He was released on 29 October, and police were informed of the mistake on Tuesday.

Kaddour-Cherif was one of two men wrongly freed from the same prison that week; both are now back in custody. William Smith, the second man, turned himself in on Thursday. Overall, the number of prisoners mistakenly released in England and Wales rose to 262 in the year to March, compared to 115 the prior year.

After his arrest, Kaddour-Cherif, convicted of indecent exposure, faced suspicions of assaulting an emergency worker. His release followed a clerical error and occurred after he was found not guilty of another charge. The lack of proper warrants from the court led to his incorrect release.

Justice Secretary David Lammy has initiated a probe, demanding detailed release checks and describing the prison system's state as a crisis. Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick criticised the error, highlighting its growing incompetence. Liberal Democrats also called for every resource to be devoted to capturing the at-large prisoners.

Looking forward, changes have been proposed to rectify systemic failures. These include tougher checks and oversight during inmate releases. However, a senior prison staffer pointed out the increased administrative burden, as the checks add a day to release processes when staffing levels are insufficient.

Key Takeaways

  • Algerian sex offender mistakenly released, re-arrested in London.
  • Systemic issues lead to increased mistaken releases in UK prisons.
  • New checks implemented, adding pressure to existing prison staff.

How many times has this kind of 'mistake' happened now?

Estimated mistaken prisoner releases in the UK for 2025 (Jan–Dec): ~300–350. Confirmed so far (Jan–Nov): ~215–250 (based on HMPPS partial data + reported cases). Final number will be in the July 2026 HMPPS report.

Somebody need to be FIRED!!!.......Lammy and the Home Secretary, for a start!

It's almost like, they are doing it deliberately??

I wonder why?😅

It's gross negligence by successive governments.  It's not just Labour, the Tories totally failed on this too - yes, prisoners released in error didn't simply start on the 1st day of the Labour government.  Apparently some prisons still have a paper-based offender management system, and they are badly understaffed.  It's little wonder things go wrong.  I read some articles (links below); it's a total embarrassment for the UK and one side or the other trying to point-score politically is just pathetic - you've all failed!
