November 15, 2025Nov 15 Hi all, I understood that if you exited Thailand on an OA and re-entered just before the visa was due to expire, you would get an automatic year extension, without going to immigration. Is this still the case? Are there any conditions, e.g. if you leave Thailand again in the next year is the visa invalidated? Thanks!

Yes, that's how it works although its not an "extension" its a new 1 year entry. You need to make sure you have the required health insurance valid for the second year. If you leave in the second year you need to get a re-entry permit to keep the 1 year entry alive.

Thanks for that. So I assume if I arrived back in Thailand on June 1, and my original visa/insurance were due to expire after June 1, I would have to have the insurance valid from June 2 onwards on hand?

Your entry will only last as long as your insurance i.e., If you only have 6 months insurance, you'll only get 6 months entry.

Invalidated so to say. But you can leave and reenter with a reentry permit and preserve your additional year of extension to stay.
November 15, 2025Nov 15 OP, you have clear correct answer in first reply. Clearly you reenter prior to expiry of the Non O-A and organize the one year insurance prior to exit so everything is in place.

I did that exact thing back in 2009 but that was quite a while ago. Did a border run to Laos
