A national crackdown in Thailand has resulted in the arrest of over 300 suspects involved in mule accounts and tech-related crimes. This operation, named "Saifa Fad: Striking Down Mule Accounts Across Thailand," is being conducted from November 18 to 26. Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej of the Cyber Crime Suppression Centre (CCSC) emphasized the significant impact of online crime, citing over 1.09 million fraud complaints since 2022 with losses surpassing 100 billion baht.

The crackdown has led to the arrest of 339 suspects, with 209 admitting to opening mule accounts. High-profile cases were also exposed, including the arrest of 15 foreign nationals in Bangkok for running a fake crypto-investment scheme targeting Turkish victims, and a Chinese national in Rayong for overseeing cash withdrawals for a call-center gang. Sim Box raids in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, and Mukdahan resulted in the seizure of 12 devices and detention of two suspects. Additionally, a "mule farm" network in Sakon Nakhon was dismantled for hiring individuals to scan their faces for TrueMoney accounts.

Further arrests include a female call-center worker in Phetchabun who scammed a victim out of 5.8 million baht and gold. A hybrid scam combining romance and investment fraud was also disrupted, resulting in over 12 arrests. Investigations revealed mule-account recruitment hubs across several provinces, indicating their role as a primary source for scam syndicates.

Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop highlighted advancements in police operations, including AI-driven data analysis to flag suspicious accounts and streamlined procedures for handling suspects. Central Investigation Bureau and Provincial Police Region 6 in Phitsanulok have been designated as central handling points to address previous investigative challenges.

Raids uncovered parcels containing mobile phones and passbooks meant for Chinese financiers, intended for receiving scam proceeds post facial-recognition account activation, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Over 300 suspects arrested in a nationwide crackdown on tech-related crimes in Thailand.
  • Major scam syndicates involving fake investments and call-centre fraud were dismantled.
  • Enhanced police operations include AI usage and centralized suspect management.

Well I never - Thailand up with Burma and Cambodia!

Could the Government of Thailand actually wake up and realise that they have become the destination of choice for criminals.  It used to be just the Chinese, and then it became lots of criminals from western countries, and now the Ukraine/Russia mafia has arrived (and they know how to keep a low profile), and next it will be the Indian Mafia (who will be a disaster).

Thailand - Hub of Criminal Mafias (all welcome - as long as they pay the kick-backs)

Police  said they did not catch all the tech related criminals  and hackers because they ransomware
