Kyiv presses for Zelensky–Trump meeting as talks intensify

Ukraine's security chief aims to arrange a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump this month as diplomatic efforts continue to end the ongoing conflict. Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine's security council, stated there is a "common understanding" between the US and Ukraine on key agreement terms from earlier Geneva talks. While the White House remains silent on the matter, discussions are in the works, highlighting the intense diplomatic activity.

In parallel, US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has been engaging with Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi, though the specifics remain under wraps. The focus, however, is on organising Zelensky's trip to the US in November to finalise negotiations with Trump. A US official travelling with Driscoll mentioned Ukraine's initial agreement to a peace proposal, though the administration referred to Secretary of State Marco Rubio for confirmation, indicating further talks are needed.

Despite attempts to reach an agreement, significant differences persist between Ukrainian and Russian positions. Kyiv and European leaders have previously criticised a US peace plan draft, finding it overly favourable to Russia. Revised proposals from the UK, France, and Germany suggest excluding recognition of Russian-occupied regions and allow for Ukraine's potential NATO membership. Zelensky has welcomed these changes as a step forward in peace efforts, reported BBC.

Russia’s Kremlin remains opposed to the proposed amendments, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov awaiting an update on the latest plan. Meanwhile, a virtual meeting of European allies is underway to discuss further developments. Ukraine recently sustained missile and drone attacks, resulting in civilian casualties, continuing the cycle of violence and humanitarian crises.

Key Takeaways:

  • Diplomatic efforts are focused on potential Trump-Zelensky talks.
  • Disagreements on the peace plan remain between Ukraine and Russia.
  • European involvement continues as missile strikes exacerbate the crisis.

Putin seems to lack any motivation to end this. It would appear he gets a great deal of joy out of taking the lives of women and children. And Trump is utterly powerless, in his ability to influence or negotiate with Putin.

Maybe the US should bring in Dave Chapelle to strike a deal. He would likely be a far better negotiator than Trump, who is dreadful when it comes to settling things with world leaders.

Talks are on the right track. I suspect peace will occur within 3-6 months.

Very doubtful.

Putin is seeking essentially to achieve the objectives he declared at the beginning of the incursion.  Which did not and does not include the annexation of the Ukraine but rather a return to the situation existing prior to the U.S.-engineered Maidan coup, which pre-empted scheduled elections, PLUS cast-iron protection of the ethnic Russian population.  He can achieve his objectives by one of two means.  A negotiated peace.  Or total victory.

Putin would prefer a negotiated peace, both for diplomatic and economic reasons.  But neither common sense nor public pressure will allow him voluntarily to exchange hard-earned victory for defeat.  Those who think otherwise are either self-delusional or see personal advantage in their own armed forces being thoroughly beaten.  As if what they have already suffered is not enough.

Zelensky and his inner circle, of which he is the figurehead but not the master, wants only war.  A western-subsidised war drawn out for as long as possible.  While it lasts they continue to enrich themselves.  When it ends they must pack their bags and go into exile, to live off the rich pickings of the war.  Much of it from syphoning off huge chunks of cash, and some derived from matériel diverted to the Albanian black market, which supplies ISIS in West Africa; and also Hamas [unlike Hezbollah, they possess U.S. weapons]

Powerful elements in Europe and in the U.S. have fingers in the pie of the western-taxpayer-funded Ukraine War.  Only a fraction of the cash reaches the Ukraine.  A major portion goes to the companies producing replacements for inventory sent to the Ukraine.  In turn those companies reward their warfare-promoting politicians and lobbyists.  The excuse of national necessity or advantage sounds hollow these days, since the Ukrainian pawn is clearly on a failing wicket.  It could not really have been otherwise despite a very valiant struggle against a more powerful opponent.

The biggest losers in this power-game and major money-laundering affair are the ordinary working-age people of the Ukraine.  It is time to call it a day.

Ukraine has to pressed for a meeting while Putin was invited with red carpet ceremonial treatment. The stark contrast in the mistreatment of an ally and cosying up to an enemy made my stomach churn. Cost for the country to be paid when leaders are compromised.

I'll admit that I lack the time or patience to sit through the complete video, but if the opening minutes are anything to go by, this fellow has little idea about the EU.

Fair question. I am speculating that both sides have had enough but I could well be wrong.
