In a bizarre case from northern Italy, a 57-year-old man has been arrested for dressing up as his deceased mother to continue claiming her pension. The case came to light when police noticed the man disguised as his mother during an identity card renewal attempt, which is required to be done in person. The man, a former nurse, did not report his mother’s death, instead resorting to an elaborate ruse including makeup, a wig, and his late mother's clothing.

 

Graziella Dall’Oglio, aged 82 at her death in 2022, passed away in the town of Borgo Virgilio near Mantua. The authorities were tipped off by an officer wary of the elderly woman's appearance and behaviour at the municipal office. Surveillance footage corroborated this suspicion, showing the man arriving dressed as his mother in a car she couldn't legally drive.

 

Upon visiting the woman’s home, police discovered her mummified body concealed in a closet, wrapped in sleeping bags. Authorities are charging the man with corpse concealment, state fraud, impersonation, and document forgery. He allegedly used syringes to remove bodily fluids to stave off decomposition. An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain her cause of death, and the suspect remains in custody while prosecutors await the results.
