German 'Hammer Gang' Trial Unleashes Shockwaves Across Europe

Seven individuals have been put on trial in Dresden, Germany, accused of being part of the militant extremist group Antifa Ost, also known as the "hammer gang." They face multiple charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. The trial follows the US’s recent designation of Antifa Ost as a terrorist organisation, raising international criminal scrutiny.

Founded between late 2017 and early 2018, Antifa Ost has been implicated in violent assaults against people identified with the right wing. Attacks reportedly occurred in Germany and Budapest, Hungary. The accused, identified under German privacy laws as Henry A, Tobias E, Johann G, Thomas J, Melissa K, Paul M, and Julian W, allegedly prepared these attacks meticulously, with Johann G playing a significant leadership role.

Prosecutors argue that Johann G orchestrated and participated in numerous assaults, while Paul M provided combat training. A notable attack in January 2019 involved violent acts against four individuals at Dessau-Rosslau train station, using heavy tools like hammers and iron bars, causing life-threatening injuries. Johann G and Paul M's activities allegedly extended to Budapest in February 2023, targeting international right-wing gatherings.

Antifa Ost's terrorist designation in the US bars its members from entering the country and freezes any related US-held assets, as part of President Donald Trump’s broader crackdown on leftist extremism. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has applauded this move. Stephan Brandner from the AfD urged the German government to emulate the US approach to curb left-wing extremism.

The German foreign ministry has acknowledged the US's decision, implying Europe is watching closely. Outcomes from this trial may influence Germany's domestic policy towards extremist groups.

Key Takeaways:

  • Seven accused of extreme-left violence stand trial in Germany.
  • They have been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in multiple attacks.
  • Antifa Ost was recently designated a terrorist group by the US.

More a Daily Mail than BBC headline. Where across Europe are the shockwaves?

The good old days are back in the Land of the Eisenszatgruppe.....

Once again proving that Antifa does exist when we were told only yesterday, in another thread about Antifa USA, by an AN member that it didn't

I think this proves that it does

Extreme violence on left or right must be punished. So that's good. It does, however, show that the left's radicals are not afraid of using violent tacticts like the right's radicals often do (US Capital, etc.). But radical, violent, political acceleration anywhere is a 'no win' for everyone, everywhere. By the way, the original report doesn't use the words 'unleashes shockwaves across Europe' - though I'd be pretty sure other Europeans are indeed watching this trial closely.

Typical violent leftists.

It's not only the US that has them unfortunately.

Lunatic leftwing terrorism

Typical of the woke, liberal EU governments. They only target extreme right-wing groups. They wouldn't go after extreme left-wing groups like this

... oh, hold on a minute .....

Violence is not anti-fascism as I understand it. What I do understand is that the rise of the AfP is indeed destabilisingly dangerous.

I agree, but left wing violence is now. You have to go back in history to find examples of right wing disorder. Unless of course you want to class the English "Pink Ladies" and farmers as terrorists.

But, Antifa doesn't exist. C'mon my leftie buddies, tell these people they got it all wrong.

Extreme right-wing violence remains a threat. A lot of (fortunately) small neo-Nazi groups exist in Europe and they are definitely not averse to causing violent disorder.

In recent history (the last 5 years), police in both Germany and Portugal have arrested right-wing extremists who were plotting coups.
