A young woman has tragically died, and a man is critically injured following a shark attack at Crowdy Bay, New South Wales. The woman, thought to be in her 20s, passed away at the scene, while the injured man was airlifted to Newcastle in a critical condition. Authorities have since shut the beach and are examining the incident with the help of shark experts.

The attack occurred at Crowdy Bay National Park, 300km north of Sydney, early Thursday morning. Despite witnesses' efforts, paramedics swiftly responded and discovered that they could not save the woman. The man sustained severe thigh injuries and required immediate medical attention.

Police and experts from the Department of Primary Industries are investigating to identify the shark species responsible. In the meantime, Surf Life Saving NSW has closed nearby beaches for at least 24 hours, using drones to monitor the situation. Steve Pearce of Surf Life Saving NSW expressed his condolences, urging beachgoers to heed lifeguards' advice and stay out of the water, reported BBC.

Key Takeaways

  • A woman is dead and a man seriously injured after a shark attacked in New South Wales.
  • Nearby beaches are closed, with drones monitoring for shark activity.
  • This marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year.

I know that Aussies usually travel for their summer vacation to Bali, or Thailand, so there can't be that many... 😂

There are a lot of shark attacks reported in local newspapers that are kept off national media, bad for  business. However the odd report like this one slips through.

A very quick search shows Australia has around 11,000 beaches and if you visit a different one every day it would take you 29 years to see them all.

When asked about shark nets to protect swimmers at New Zealand beaches, former prime minister Muldoon is said to have replied something along the lines of:

"I have no intention of providing shark nets for New Zealand beaches. If the swimmers want to attack the sharks, then that is their prerogative." 😆

They've been proven to kill many species of sea life. The destruction is quite severe.

There have only been 5 fatal shark attacks in Australian waters this year. That's a miniscule percentage of those who venture into the sea and an even smaller percentage of the amount of sharks killed by humans.

Everyone knows the risks when in the sea. That make a choice and take their chance.
