Putin Signals US-Led Ukraine Peace Talks but Warns of Land Grabs

Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted that a US initiative could facilitate future Ukraine peace talks while also threatening further territorial grabs if Ukrainian forces do not retreat. Speaking in Kyrgyzstan, Putin announced the anticipated visit of US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow for serious discussions. However, he maintained his stance that the conflict will only end with Ukrainian military withdrawal from occupied regions.

Russia currently controls approximately 20% of Ukraine's internationally recognised territories, including parts of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. Moscow insists that Ukraine surrender these territories in their entirety, which remains a significant sticking point. Recent Russian gains around Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine have been noted, but experts like the US-based Institute for the Study of War suggest that a quick Russian victory is not guaranteed.

Kyiv and its European partners insist that territorial losses are unacceptable, forming a critical defensive barrier for Ukraine in the contested regions. Putin's recent remarks underscore Russia's firm stance, contrasting with recent US claims of progress in peace efforts. This followed initial backlash and amendments to a US-drafted 28-point peace plan, which originally leaned heavily towards Russian demands, including restrictions on Ukraine's military and NATO aspirations, reported CNN.

Looking forward, Putin has expressed surprise at the discussions and is open to the new draft of the peace plan, although its details remain undisclosed. The upcoming meetings between the US and Russia could clarify positions, but major challenges linger given the conflicting demands.

Key Takeaways

  • Putin states US plan as potential base for Ukraine peace talks.
  • Russia demands Ukraine's withdrawal; warns of forceful action.
  • US envoy's visit to Moscow could lead to fresh peace dialogue.

I wish we had a real president that stood up for democracy sovereignty and rule of law unfortunately we have you know who.

Putin looks sick !

What Putin will accept Zelensky won't and what Zelensky will accept Putin won't. The likely outcome is this war will be fought to it's conclusion and this will be when Russian troops reach the Dnipro river and control the Oblasts Putin wants.

Taiwan has recently announced a 40 billion dollar increase in their defense budget. They already see the current US administration playing fast and loose with the life and liberty of their Allies and pandering to China's.

Most poeple including the US recognise that Taiwan is part of China...same as Hong Kong

Does "most people" include the Taiwanese? As far as one can tell they manifestly don't  want to be part of China, or are their views, like those of the people of Ukraine of no account?

Should NATO put boots on the ground in Ukraine?

Is the West willing to engage in war to defend these nations?   Talk is cheap.

40 billion dollars is not cheap talk.

Fighting doggedly to defend ones country is not cheap talk.

NATO is a defensive alliance of (principally) European nations, rather than an arm of America's enthusiasm for expeditionary warfare to further it's political interests. Ukraine is not part of NATO but the European Nations which make up much of NATO stand with and provide material and political support for Ukraine in it's fight for survival.

What is notable is that the European Union, together with the UK and Norway, are emerging as serious players in this support for Ukraine. Mr Trump's manifest dislike for NATO, (he doesn't control it and many/most/virtually all of it's members are not in his "gang) and his ignoring allies in his dealings with Putin have hastened this in recent months.

The people of Europe should step up and put some boots on the ground.    Talk is cheap.

You need to join the Ukrainian military to show how much you care.

You should learn what America stands for…..and that’s not abandoning a country being invaded by a bunch of raping murdering looting hoards…..nore does it stand for a president who seems to be taking orders from the enemy.hope that helps but doubt it.

Of course.   But only if we can asset strip them afterwards.  Doesn’t matter which party is in power.

Probably.

"Mandarin is spoken by nearly 80% of Taiwan's population, making it the most widely used language across the island. Its prevalence in government affairs, educational institutions, and the media underscores its central role in Taiwan's daily life and national identity."

And I very much suspect such asset stripping is at the heart of this, both the very large amounts of "frozen" Russian cash and the potential to make money from exploiting Ukrainian resources once it is subject to Putin's control.

English is spoken very widely in North America, Australia, New Zealand and large parts of Africa. That doesn't mean that the UK has a claim to those countries. My daughter speaks some Mandarin, that doesn't make her Chinese.

It will be exciting to watch.  I’m not sure which I will be able to devote more time to.   The US asset stripping both Russia and Ukraine or American homedebtors who are about to be asset stripped by the banks because they were silly enough to take a 2% ARM mortgage at peak bubble prices in 2022.

Got popcorn?

The plights of neither the Ukrainian people nor those of the Americans with mortgages will bother the very wealthy who will be doing the asset stripping!

Your virtual signaling requires minimal effort. It's a lost cause; Putin will not leave or give up unless someone launches a massive air campaign against his troops in Ukraine. Is that really what you want?

Please define the wealthy.

Won’t bother me either.   I’m looking forward to scoring a cheap condo.  Had they lowered interest rates, it would have given the homedebtors some breathing room.   But for some reason, people hated the idea that Trump wanted to lower interest rates.  I admit.  I was one of those people too.

I’m sure many members here who seem to love Ukraine will be excited to move over there for the women….ya know….since there will be a shortage of men.

Mongers to the rescue!

Utterly ridiculous. Time to grow up.

The Taiwanese can't decide themselves whether they are not part of China. Most of the countries in the world recognise only one China, as Taiwan part of it.

Google AI:

Many national constitutions that address secession forbid it. In the U.S., the Supreme Court has ruled that unilateral secession is unconstitutional.

So if the Mexicans in California decide to form a new country they won't be allowed to do so. The will of the people? Lol
