Putin Considers US Plan for Ukraine Peace Deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that a US peace proposal could form the foundation for resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, Putin warned that if Ukraine rejects the plan, Russian forces will continue their advance. The US plan, backed by President Trump, includes demands on NATO involvement, territorial adjustments, and recognition of Russian-controlled regions.

This development follows a recent meeting of the Russian Security Council, where Putin shared that the 28-point proposal hadn't been fully discussed with the US yet, though Moscow has reviewed it. He criticised both Kyiv and European powers for not recognising the current situation, highlighting that Russian troops are gaining ground in Ukraine. Russia currently controls over 19% of Ukrainian territory and aims to establish full control over the Donbas region, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed concerns about the country's sovereignty and US support in light of the US peace plan. Putin revealed that discussions around Trump's proposal took place before their August summit in Alaska, during which Russia agreed to some compromises. Putin stressed that if Ukraine doesn't engage with the plan, recent military actions like the capture of Kupiansk could become more common, reported Reuters.

Looking forward, if Kyiv dismisses the proposal, the tension is likely to escalate. Russia appears poised to continue its military advancements should negotiations falter. Both global and regional stakeholders will closely monitor any further diplomatic engagements or military developments.

Key Takeaways:

  • Putin warns that Russian troops will advance if Ukraine rejects the US peace plan.
  • The US proposal involves significant concessions regarding NATO and territory.
  • Diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine remain uncertain.

Negotiations on the new US peace plan may last around 12 months, as it currently contains many unrealistic provisions, The Washington Post reports. A source familiar with the matter told the outlet that it would take "months of painstaking negotiations" to bring the peace plan to a format acceptable for Ukraine.

"Even if Zelenskyy wanted to sign it, he couldn’t because there is no political basis for it. There are many nonstarters there. Clearly, this is a pro-Russian deal that was written by Dmitriev and Witkoff," the source said.

According to the source, the document resembles a minerals deal that was modified over three months before being signed.

"But this deal is between the US, Ukraine, Russia, and Europe, so I think it will be more like 12 months to negotiate. I think this is the beginning of the peace process, not the end," this person said.

Should have done that when he dictated it!

Yes, let's reward the invading army by giving them the territory of a sovereign nation.
