UK MP Tulip Siddiq Gets Two-Year Sentence in Bangladesh Court

A court in Dhaka has sentenced British MP Tulip Siddiq to two years in prison for her involvement in a corruption case tied to a government land project in Bangladesh. Siddiq, the niece of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was found guilty alongside her aunt, who received a five-year sentence. Siddiq's mother, Sheikh Rehana, was given seven years as the case's main participant.

The case revolves around allegations of power misuse by Hasina and corrupt influence by Siddiq to aid her mother and siblings in acquiring a government land plot. The court also levied a $813 fine on each of the three and revoked Rehana’s land allocation. There are an additional 14 suspects in the investigation.

Hasina's Awami League party criticised the verdict, accusing the anti-corruption body of being politically motivated. The party and international legal experts have questioned the fairness of the judicial process, asserting that the allegations lack credibility.

Prosecutor Khan Mohammed Mainul Hasan expressed disappointment with the sentencing, having sought life imprisonment for the primary defendants. Hasan indicated plans to consult the commission for a potential appeal. Meanwhile, Siddiq contested the ruling, asserting her British citizenship and labelling the trial a “complete farce.”

Siddiq stepped down from her role as economic secretary to the UK Treasury earlier this year, citing the Bangladesh case's disruptive effect on her governmental duties. The Labour Party has dismissed the Bangladesh verdict, underscoring Siddiq’s lack of fair legal treatment and notification about the charges.

Sheikh Hasina, sentenced previously for crimes against humanity during last year’s uprising, remains in exile in India, with her legal proceedings conducted in absentia. Her family members, including her daughter and son, face further charges related to separate incidents.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus currently leads an interim administration in Bangladesh, with upcoming elections scheduled for February, reported CNN.

Key Takeaways

  • British MP Tulip Siddiq has been sentenced in Bangladesh for corruption.
  • Awami League and Labour Party contest verdicts as politically motivated.
  • Legal proceedings continue amid Bangladesh's interim government rule.

Not to mention the jail sentence for corruption in Bangladesh.

She's a good fit for Labour though.

She'd be free in the UK!

Absolutely.

Woman? Check.

Minority? Check.

Muslim? Check.

Left wing? Check.

She'd have more chance of flying to Mars on a David Lammy designed space rocket than spending a day in jail.

I sent the following email to my Labour MP. Not expecting any reply, he has never replied to any of the others that I sent.

"Will it be Labour party and Labour Government policy to have Tulip Saddiq removed as the MP for Hampstead and Highgate? Or as her criminal conviction is in another country will the Labour Government allow Tulip Saddiq to remain as a member of the Labour party and sit in Parliament as a Labour MP."

A UK MP automatically keeps their seat unless they are sentenced to at least one year in prison by a UK court. A foreign conviction, even in absentia, does not trigger disqualification under UK parliamentary rules.

Correct a UK court which is why I was asking my useless Labour MP will the Labour party do anything as this was a two year sentence from a foreign court. Let's see just how corrupt Labour are whether they do kick her our of Parliament or do nothing. Given how hot Labour are on crime at the moment. Well with regard to hurty words anyway.

I doubt they will kick her out.

Her recent conviction (amongst other scandals) make her a perfect fit for Starmer's corrupt cabal of commie charlatans.
