Pattana Promphat, Minister of Public Health, responded to claims from Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn about the death toll in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, Thailand. Surachate suggested fatalities numbered in the thousands, contradicting MOPH's official count. Promphat asserted that the Ministry's figures are accurate, verified through death certificates, and emphasized the classification process causing a misunderstanding of body count.

The dispute arose after reports of numerous body storage units led to speculation about higher fatalities. Promphat clarified that bodies are categorized and reorganized post-autopsy, contributing to the perception of higher numbers. Concerns were also raised about Hakparn's website, Hakparn.com, used for victims' relatives to register evidence, which the Minister dismissed as insufficient for legal death certification.

Promphat stated the final death count would be confirmed by official certificates, with no current reports of missing persons affecting figures. He maintained that the MOPH's reported number of 140 fatalities, as of December 1, was accurate. The differentiation between deaths by drowning and other causes is ongoing, with results expected soon.

Looking forward, the Ministry remains focused on recovery, deploying mental health teams and medical staff to manage health issues like leptospirosis. Promphat praised the efforts of medical staff during the crisis. He confirmed that monitoring efforts are continuous, ensuring accurate death toll reporting and robust public health responses, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • MOPH stands by its report of 140 fatalities in Songkhla floods.
  • Death certificates are the official verification for deceased counts.
