Thai authorities have conducted raids on seven bitcoin mining operations valued at approximately 300 million baht, suspecting them to be part of Chinese transnational scam networks. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) executed the raids on Tuesday in Samut Sakhon and Uthai Thani provinces. Officials seized 3,642 mining devices valued at 270 million baht, along with electrical equipment worth 30 million baht.

 

The raids targeted six locations in Samut Sakhon and one in Uthai Thani, with operations set up in both warehouses and residential homes. Many of the devices were housed in containers equipped with water-cooling systems and were soundproofed for efficient operation. Each bitcoin produced requires about 155,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, amounting to roughly 620,000 baht at the current average cost of 4 baht per unit.

 

The DSI suspects these bitcoin mines were generating income for Chinese scam gangs operating out of Myanmar, with financial transactions exceeding 5 billion baht. In response, the DSI is expanding its investigation and has requested assistance from the Chinese government to aid their efforts.

 

Looking ahead, the Thai authorities plan to deepen their investigation into the widespread network and identify further connections. Collaboration with international partners is expected to intensify as the DSI seeks to dismantle the networks and prevent future operations from setting up in Thailand, reported Bangkok Post.

I'm not seeing an actual crime here - often it involves not paying electric bills but they don't state that here.

Did they just shut down a legit operation because someone 'suspects' the owner may be linked to someone who did something wrong?

the getting the hardware is another question.

anyways, in reality, It is likely closer to 1.0M – 1.4M THB per coin depending on the specific miner efficiency.

I can't believe that China would be doing this.

I would like to see a law leading to destruction of computers used for bitcoins: massive drain on electrical grid and produce NOTHING tangible, an 'imaginary coin' of use mainly by tax dodgers, criminal networks, crooked politicians and others wanting bribery payoffs
