Like with most things... it depends. If you want to live like a local, then yes, still cheap and doable, but if you have preferences for healthy organic food, going out to western restaurants/bars, partying, or imported food/drinks or stuff, then it can be very overpriced. They are very smart here with leaving the locals alone to have their not expensive stuff/life but exploiting those who want anything nice... sure have to pay for that through the snout, unless you are very cunning and can do stuff yourself from scratch (like cooking) and going to cheaper places to get stuff. Also, the tourist-trap cities will gouge you on everything just because because, but once out of them you can be okay. There is much whataboutery on this topic, but it is all cleverly designed to fleece those who are not local and can't do without their comforts or indulgencies... but those with discipline and less fancy likes far better. Most Thais use the Blue Flag government shops or markets for most things, but you too as a foreigner can use them too, just have to find them.
