Police are investigating two firework-related incidents during New Year celebrations that injured several people and prompted a crackdown on illegal production sites. In Watthana district, a firework explosion on Soi Pridi Banomyong 26 left seven injured, necessitating hospital treatment for three individuals. Meanwhile, authorities in Suphan Buri raided an illegal firework workshop, seizing large quantities of explosive materials.

In the Watthana district incident, police arrived at 10:44 PM on New Year’s Eve to find a large firework had toppled over, dispersing debris that injured bystanders. Initial investigations suggest the firework, approximately 50 centimeters tall, was improperly placed, leading to the explosion. Officials have collected unused fireworks for forensic analysis to assess compliance with safety standards and determine the explosion’s cause.

Authorities will question those involved with the fireworks pending forensic results. District inspections revealed the fireworks were launched without official permission. In Suphan Buri, following complaints from concerned residents, a raid uncovered more than 200 liters of explosive powder at an illegal workshop, resulting in the homeowner's arrest under the Explosives Act.

Suphan Buri district chief Sitthiporn Konghom emphasized the importance of the operation in preventing large-scale accidents, highlighting past fatal incidents from illegal workshops. Community members have been urged to report suspicious activities, and strict inspections will continue to ensure safety and compliance with regulations, reported Bangkok Post.

I'm surprised there were not more accidents and injuries over the new year period.

Where I live, the indiscriminate use of fireworks starts around the 27th December and goes on all night through to mid Januar.
