French man dies after Bangkok knife confrontation

Featured Replies

A 34-year-old French national has died in hospital after being shot by police during a knife confrontation in Bangkok's Pattanakarn Soi 43.

Police said the man, named by authorities as Ba Adam, had allegedly been behaving aggressively and chasing local residents with a knife when officers from Khlong Tan Police Station were called to intervene. One officer was injured after being struck in the right leg with the knife.

Police say taser did not stop him

The confrontation took place inside Pattanakarn Soi 43, where prevention and suppression officers from Khlong Tan Police Station attempted to bring the French man under control.

Police initially used a taser, but said it did not stop him. He then allegedly attacked an officer with the knife, prompting police to return fire in self-defence.

The suspect was hit by two bullets in the leg and one in the body. He was taken to Police General Hospital for treatment.

At 9am on 25 July, Pol Col Phisit Meewiriyakul, superintendent of Khlong Tan Police Station, said he had been informed that the suspect had died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Injured officer is stable

The injured officer, identified as Officer Charuj Yaemsuan, was among the police sent to deal with the incident. He was taken to Vibhavadi Hospital after suffering a knife wound to his right leg.

His condition was initially reported to be stable and safe, according to the Khlong Tan police superintendent.

The case highlights the risks faced by police and emergency responders when incidents involving weapons and apparent distress or aggressive behaviour unfold in residential areas of Bangkok.

Or how about tasers do not not bring people down who are high on meth or otherwise seriously determined to do harm, or for a myriad of other reasons. Ineffective 30-40% of the time, no matter the trai

Oh yes, you expect the copper to take the time to specifically aim for the legs, while a man is charging with a knife. Brilliant. This isn't the movies. In the circumstances described, the only option

Doesn't really sound like suicide by police. Ba was certainly the condition Adam was in. Probably the body shot was unnecessary--it may have been the first by a scared cop.

For a self proclaimed pacifist and supporter of non violence you don't seem too concerned.

Maybe should have just shot the knife of his hand, like in the movies.

Spilt milk, isn't it? As I said, no need for a body shot. The shots to the legs would have brought him down.

Oh yes, you expect the copper to take the time to specifically aim for the legs, while a man is charging with a knife. Brilliant. This isn't the movies. In the circumstances described, the only option is to aim for the largest target possible and to make it count so that the assailant cannot stab the intended victim. The police officer had 1-3 seconds to fire before the knife would have entered his body, potentially killing that police officer. Aiming for a smaller target makes it more likely that someone nearby gets shot instead. You live in an imaginary world.

Always easy for the keyboard experts to give advice, especially when not in the situation of a life being threatened.

I would say the two shots in the leg were unnecessary. The guy was coming after the police with a knife...a deadly weapon. Shoot for mass...it's a bigger target to neutralize the perp.

You're having a laff, right? Go for center mass everytime.

possible he believes the Thai police should have dispatched an unarmed "crisis counselor" to deal with the knife wielding lunatic.🤨

It would have been preferable if the cop acted like he was in a trick shooting show and shot the knife out of the hand.

A shot to the legs is considered a war crime. He should have shot the knife out of the man's hand and then tackled him.

I don't know if youre joking, but the hand is a very low percentage shot.

Cops dont operate like that at all.

Of course he's joking, the only reason for a cop drawing his gun is deadly force.

Extremely rare for a foreigner to be shot by police in Thailand. Internet search only turned up two cases in the past 20 years, one involving an off-duty cop and the other involving a cop who got into an argument with a foreign couple and lost his cool. One of the things I most appreciate about Thailand is Thai police aversion to using lethal force. I imagine that due to the rarity of these events, and Buddhist precepts against killing, the officer involved in this shooting may have been severely traumatized, and my sympathy goes out to him and his loved ones.

Why??? You really think a crazy Frog with a knife deserved to be executed???

Nope, Disabling an attacker not kill them!

Unless you're talking about the US, of course, where anything goes when it comes to the police. No accountability.

He lives in an world of imaginary constructs that ignore reality. Much of what he pushes is intended to incite and to provoke. He can be seen as Asean Now's version of Armus.

For those who wish to know; Armus was created when an ancient alien race of titans stripped all malice, hatred, and negative traits from their own psyches, leaving behind a sentient, black, viscous pool of toxic malicious evil.

The police tried non lethal method and failed. Would you rather the police be killed.

Deadly force was 100% necessary.

Yes.

An ignorant comment/commentator bites the dust.

The main point is that if a knife wielder is approaching, the ONLY option, the only safe and logical option, is to shoot, immediately.

A guy with a knife can close the distance very fast, and one stab to the heart is immediately fatal.

Why can't people here understand this simple logic???

Have they lost touch with reality?

Or, do they just hate cops?

No hatred for cops. But murder should not have been the first option here. For example, staying in the patrol car, shooting for the legs aso. This was completely unnecessary force.
