A 42-year-old Myanmar woman was killed after being struck by a car while crossing a main road in Chachoengsao late on New Year’s Day, prompting a brief confrontation between friends of the victim and the driver before it emerged they were of the same nationality. The collision occurred at about 22:00 on 1 January 2026 on Suwinthawong Road, inbound to Bangkok, near the U-turn by Wat Chana Songkhram in Moo 7, Khlong Nakhon Nueang Khet subdistrict. Police confirmed the woman died at the scene from severe head injuries.

According to police, the victim, identified as Nang Nan, aged 42 and a Myanmar national, had been socialising with friends during the New Year holiday when drinks ran out. She volunteered to cross the road to buy more alcohol from a shop on the opposite side, running across a section near the front of a factory. As she crossed, she was hit by a grey Mazda 2 saloon car with Bangkok registration, which sustained damage to the front left side, including a shattered windscreen, torn bumper and crumpled bonnet.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Suphawat Manatchai, a duty investigator at Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station, said officers, forensic doctors from Buddhothorn Hospital and local rescue workers attended the scene. A single flip-flop belonging to the victim was found about 10 metres from her body, which lay around 30 metres from the car. The driver, Ye Len, aged 31 and also a Myanmar national, remained at the scene to give a statement.

Ye Len told police he had been returning to Bangkok with his wife and child after a holiday in Pattaya. He said he did not see the woman as she ran across the road at the unmarked crossing point in front of the factory and struck her, causing her body to be thrown along the roadway. He stopped immediately after the impact and spoke with the victim’s friends.

Li So, aged 35, a friend of the deceased, said the car was travelling very fast and that he heard a loud impact before realising his friend had been hit. He ran to the scene and photographed the car’s registration number and initially argued with the driver after the driver said he was not at fault because the woman ran into the road. The argument subsided when the driver spoke in Burmese and both men realised they were from the same country, after which they apologised to each other.

Khoasod reported that forensic doctors conducted a preliminary examination at the scene before rescue workers transferred the body to Buddhothorn Hospital, where it is being held pending contact from relatives to arrange religious rites. Investigators have summoned the driver for further questioning at Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station to determine the exact cause of the crash and proceed with legal action.
