The Thai Cabinet has approved a 15.8 billion baht expressway connecting Bang Bua Thong in Nonthaburi to Bang Pa-in in Ayutthaya. This decision, intended to alleviate traffic on Bangkok’s western side, is set to align with future urban expansion plans.

The proposed M9 motorway will run through Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Ayutthaya as part of Bangkok’s western beltway. Approved as part of the 2026 fiscal budget, the project will not financially burden the next government. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed that the Department of Highways will oversee the project, funded by toll revenue and the department’s existing budget.

Despite parliament dissolution, the Ministry of Transport confirmed with the Council of State that the project was permissible for Cabinet approval. Phiphat emphasized that the M9 project has been ongoing and is not linked to election activities. By including it in the annual budget, the project complies with electoral regulations, although new projects could cause issues if pursued during the campaign outside the regular budget.

Additionally, the Expressway Authority of Thailand is working with private partners on two Phuket expressways. These expressways cover 34.6 kilometres with a budget of 27 billion baht, and are expected to be operational by 2030, featuring toll fees between 15 to 125 baht, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The M9 project is part of the 2026 fiscal budget with no new financial liabilities.
