A violent incident in Phitsanulok ended with police using live ammunition to subdue a knife-wielding man after a Taser failed to stop him, leaving the suspect injured and under arrest. The confrontation occurred in a residential alley, prompting an urgent police response to protect residents and officers.

The incident was reported on 7 January, following events that took place on 6 January in Soi Borom Trai Lokanat 45, Muang district, Phitsanulok province. Pol Lt Cdr Laemtong Moonthakram, Deputy Inspector of Patrol at Muang Phitsanulok Police Station, received an emergency call reporting a man behaving violently and chasing villagers with a knife.

More than 10 motorcycle patrol officers were dispatched to the scene to contain the situation. Upon arrival, police found Mr Sinchai in a highly agitated state, brandishing a knife and attempting to attack officers despite repeated efforts to calm him.

Police initially deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Mr Sinchai without lethal force. However, the electric shock device failed to stop his advance and he continued trying to slash at officers with the knife, posing an immediate threat to life.

With the danger escalating, officers made the decision to use live ammunition as a last resort. One round was fired into Mr Sinchai’s thigh, causing him to fall to the ground, after which police were able to restrain and arrest him.

A witness who alerted authorities said Mr Sinchai had been destroying household items inside his home, creating loud banging noises from smashing plates and furniture. The witness, who operates a coin-operated laundry and is elderly, said Mr Sinchai approached while holding a knife, causing fear and prompting a call to the emergency number 191 for help.

According to Pol Col Watcharapong Sitthirungroj, Superintendent of Muang Phitsanulok Police Station, initial questioning of the suspect’s wife revealed the man had argued with her earlier that morning. He reportedly suspected her of infidelity, sat drinking alcohol in front of the house and later became uncontrollably aggressive due to jealousy.

Police believe Mr Sinchai was intoxicated from alcohol and may also have had drugs in his system, noting that the Taser was ineffective. Rescue workers from the Prasat Boon Sathan Foundation transported him to Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital for treatment and drug testing, with police guarding him at all times to prevent escape. SiamNews reported that authorities will await medical results before proceeding with further legal action.
