Medical experts in Thailand are raising concerns over the People’s Party's proposal permitting individuals to choose honourific titles matching their gender identity. The policy aims for inclusivity by allowing transgender women to identify as female; however, doctors warn this could compromise patient safety by confusing gender identity with biological sex, particularly in emergency healthcare settings.

The core issue involves the crucial role of sex-based information in diagnosis and treatment. Healthcare professionals stress that biological sex is foundational for medical procedures, drug dosages, and screenings. Errors stemming from assumptions made on honorific titles could lead to missed or inappropriate medical treatments, especially for sex-specific conditions like reproductive organ disorders and cancers.

Experts discuss the potential misuse of identity documents and the added administrative burden these changes could bring. Candidate Kanasit Puangampai of the People’s Party suggests linking detailed medical records to national IDs as a solution. However, medical professionals stress that in emergencies, clinicians need immediate, visible information rather than relying on databases.

Professor Dr Chawalit Lertbutsayanukul of Chulalongkorn Hospital’s Cancer Centre points out that automated screening systems could mistakenly exclude transgender patients from essential screenings if legal gender overshadows biological data.

Hormone therapy complicates matters further by altering cancer risks and other medical factors. Dr Chawalit underlines that the focus must remain on patient safety rather than ideology, with candidates being honest with doctors to achieve accurate medical outcomes, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Medical experts voice significant concerns regarding patient safety risks tied to the People’s Party policy on gender titles.

  • Clinicians stress the importance of biological sex for correct diagnosis and treatment, particularly in time-sensitive emergencies.

  • Experts advocate for balancing gender identity respect with accurate biological data to prevent medical errors.

Only in Thailand a problem.. In many other countries there is no problem... for the doctors the patient will transform in a few years not an overnight so they can adjust everything during the years... But in Thailand easy things are made complicated as people have to start thinking...This is just a fake reason to not accept gender switch

Exactly. Think of a female transgender...with a prostate!

That's a spot-of-bother for sure.

A troublesome prostate would be harder to deal with than an unwanted willy.

It's just the elites finding another avenue to discredit the favorite party in the election. I can't be bothered to look up these doctors - but I know who they will back. So do you,

It says a lot about the level of capability of the doctors...

Oh my God...Thailand is making the same absurd choices as the western nations did and are not going back on it due to all the problems it generated.
