Australian Writers' Festival Axed After Author's Barring

Australia’s prestigious Adelaide Writers’ Festival was abruptly cancelled after the organisers disinvited Palestinian-Australian author Randa Abdel-Fattah. This decision led to the resignation of festival director Louise Adler and a boycott by 180 authors. Adler criticised the board’s move, stating it compromises free speech amid pressure following the Bondi Beach shooting.

The controversy started when the festival board disinvited Abdel-Fattah, citing cultural sensitivity concerns in the wake of the Bondi Beach incident. The attack during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration claimed 15 lives, resulting in heightened tensions and calls for stricter hate speech laws. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a national day of mourning for the victims, scheduled for January 22.

The festival board expressed regret over their decision, acknowledging it led to increased division. Major literary figures, including former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and authors like Zadie Smith and Percival Everett, withdrew from the event in solidarity with Abdel-Fattah. The board apologised for how the situation was represented but insisted the decision was not about identity but about managing freedom of expression amid Australia’s changing discourse.

Abdel-Fattah rejected the apology, stating she had no connection to the Bondi attack and condemned the board’s actions as racist. Adler’s resignation and criticism highlighted concerns over free speech and the influence of lobbying on public discourse. The South Australian government has since appointed a new festival board, with no immediate plans for the festival's continuation this year, reported NBC News.

Key Takeaways:

  • Adelaide Writers’ Festival was cancelled due to author boycott and resignations.

  • Randa Abdel-Fattah's disinvitation was linked to Bondi Beach shooting tensions.

  • New festival board was appointed following free speech and censorship concerns.

Responsibilities to whom?

Countries that violate international law to steal territory and drive other people off their land?

We are living in an increasingly polarised world driven by ignorance.

Respecting the rights of indigenous people isn't really a thing any more.

Look at the UK for example.

"What do we want?"

"Justice for the Picts"

Etc.

A weak response.

You can do better, Raymond.

Ouch! That hurts, John. I was feeling pleased with myself,

Still, it's the sentiment that counts: Free the Picts and other Celtic tribes of Britain.(I doubt that you consider this statement any better).
