I am interested in buying a Bose Lifestyle Home Entertainment system. I have been to Numchai in Pattaya but i don't get that much confidence about their ability to install the system to a good enough standard, plus their prices are very steep. Does anyone know of any other supplier within Thailand that comes recommended? I am aware that there is an in country direct dealer but when i go onto their web site all the information is obviously in Thai, so i am at a loss as to their location.

Numchai installed my home entertainment system.

I specified the cables, connectors etc.

No problem... very professional.

I'd use them again.

Jai Dee, this is great news! I visited their show room on Sukhumvit but the whole thing was a bit of a mess and nothing was correctly set up, thus my reasons for not feeling too confident. I will aproach them again with all of my requirements and see what they come up with price wise. Thanks Again.

Do some research on the Bose system first.

Do some research on the Bose system first.

I visited a Bose Showroom in Dubai and was blown away with the Lifestyle system set up. If you have any information that would sway me away from Bose please let me know?

I used to have a lifestyle system that I was very happy with. A mate of mine who works as a professional audio guy (TV, Music Production etc.) told me there is a saying in the industry that goes something like "No highs, no lows, must be Bose". Which refers to the systems missing some frequencies at the low and high end (couldn't hear it myself though).

I have heard this mentioed before and like you i could notice any issues. The set up in Dubai was impressive and along with the remote system you can operate it in up to 14 different rooms! I have looked at others but for me Bose covers all my requirements, i just want someone who can be trusted to install correctly, so Numchai from what i can read will be OK. I'll let you know how it goes!

The guy from Numchai who set up my home theatre system (connected to 50" plasma TV and satellite TV receiver) did a very good job... he preset all the balances etc to suit my living room furniture arrangement.

My brother has a Bose lifestyle system back in Australia. He's very happy with it.

Personally, and I am by no means an audiophile, the sound seemed a bit lacking in depth to me. I think that you could probably get more bang for your buck with other systems.

However... if you're sold on Bose... and your budget is no object... go for it!

The "no highs, no lows.." comment has some truth in it The fundamental approach was that Dr. Bose concentrated on both the speaker design and the perception of sound. In crude terms aiming for performance matched to the human hearing range.

Regards

PS Though these days they do seem notably more expensive than comparable systems.

The Bose systems are not audiophile by any means, You have to be VERY careful when testing it out in the showroom - these are very scientifically set-up to give the absolute best sound possible, something that its impossible to set-up at home.

I don't think they sound good at all, but some people seem to like their sound, to me a Bose system is the equivelant of aggressively using a graphic equaliser, giving a plastic and falsely pleasing first impression by highlighting specific frequencies. There is no Bass to speak of and the top end is pretty nasty.

Bose spend more money on advertising than just about ALL the other audio companies put together.

If you like the look and function of them then thats fine, but don't expect them to sound as good as other audio systems costing half as much. Those little cube speakers are pretty much identical to the PC speakers that you can buy for 1,000 baht a pair, often using identical drivers (speaker units).

The best place to look and listen, is at the Hi Fi Center in Bangkok on Ratchadamri Road (next to Big C). It's like an audio/video shopping mall.

Also closer to Pattaya there is Piyanas in Siracha (038-325-701).

In the Bose price range look at Denon Receiver, Oppo DVD player, and NHT Classic Three speakers.

If you want to hear how a "good" system sounds - go to the Hi Fi Center.

For a multi-room system I would suggest looking at something specifically designed for that purose, rather than tacked on.

for example Sonos, Elan, Nuvo etc...

What is it about the Bose that attracts you?

The sound

The looks

The functionality

Hi

I am in Chiangmai, where good Hifi shops are not many, after years of second hand , I have just bought a basic system, Marantz amp and CD, and some truly amazing speakers (Mordaunt Short 902i), a steal for that price. Definetely better than Bose...

Try your system in your home first, if the hop is willing to lend it to you. The listening room (and the setup) is, IMO, one of the most important component of a system.

Try Hifi center in Bangkok, and there are also quite a few good shops in Fortune, but more Hi end, you should find something to suit your taste and budget.

Good luck.. :o

It seems from the replies that the HiFi Center in Bangkok is the place the visit before i start handing over well earned cash. The Bose system appeals to me for it's functionality probably more than its sound, because it has the ability to cover so much of a property but i will take some of your ideas on board and do some searching first.

If it's multi-room audio that is the main feature, there's a lot of systems out there designed just for that purpose that are much better suited and cheaper, Check out Sonos for example, I personally use and sell this product and its light years ahead of anything else on teh market.

Solosiam,

I have had a shop around and the Sonos system looks very good. Can you advise me on set up and prices?

In my experience one of the problems with buying hi fi equipment is often that everyone has an opinion and then self doubt about your research and choices sets in. A few months ago I made the decision to buy 2 Bose systems for my apartment, the decision was based on looks, prcaticality and sound. I needed small speakers that could be ceiling mounted, speakers that didn't dominate my space and a pretty good sound. The truth is unless you are an absolute expert in a closed listening room you aren't really going to notice, there is always peripheral sound infiltrating what you hear, and we all don't have the same quality of hearing either. As you go for supposedly better systems the price increases dramatically and you have to ask yourself was it worth thousands of dollars to get a slight increase in quality.

I bought my Bose through EAD in Thong Lor, they built the Virgin Radio Studio and have done lots of high end installations...and they got me a discount which I couldn't get in the Bose oulet at Paragon.... I used one of their installation sub contractors to install it all. I'm not an audiophile, but have spent years in the Music industry so do have an inkling (we used Bose in some areas of our office), when I listen to my setup at home I do think 'wicked' and it looks great too. Someone will always have an opinion in the end I've found it's best just to go for what makes you happy, if you like it buy it. If anyone wants the contacts for EAD or the installation guy just PM me
