European NATO countries are dispatching military personnel to Greenland for joint exercises with Denmark as US President Donald Trump escalates threats to annex the Arctic island. Trump's declarations have disrupted NATO, hinting at a major crisis within the alliance if the US attempts to annex another member's territory. Denmark, responsible for Greenland's defence, warned that any attack could dismantle NATO and announced an increased military presence in cooperation with allies.

Germany, Sweden, France, Norway, the Netherlands, and Finland have confirmed sending troops to Greenland this week. Both Canada and France plan to open consulates in Nuuk soon. French President Emmanuel Macron revealed French military personnel are already in Greenland, with more reinforcements expected. Finland’s defence ministry will also send liaison officers.

It’s common for NATO nations to conduct joint exercises, especially in the Arctic Circle, but the recent deployments represent strong unity amidst high tensions. The US currently has about 150 troops stationed at its base in northwestern Greenland. Trump has been open about his plans to control Greenland, citing potential forceful measures if necessary, underscoring his intentions during a press conference with oil executives.

Germany announced sending a 13-member reconnaissance team to Greenland on Thursday for an exploration mission with partner nations. Sweden also dispatched troops as a part of an upcoming exercise called Operation Arctic Endurance, according to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Norway and the Netherlands confirmed they were sending defence personnel for this exercise.

NATO, comprising 30 countries from Europe, the US, and Canada, is based on mutual defence, making US threats against Greenland unusual. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described potential US attacks as "unlikely," emphasising the rarity of NATO countries attacking each other.

News of European deployments coincided with meetings between Danish and Greenlandic officials and US representatives like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. Trump reiterated US control over Greenland as beneficial to NATO. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen acknowledged a frank but unresolved discussion, with plans to form a high-level working group.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand expressed Canada’s support for Denmark and Greenland’s sovereignty and plans a trip to Greenland for opening a consulate in Nuuk. France will open a consulate on 6 February, highlighting lengthy preparations. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called for the US to stop threatening Greenland, stating that such actions contradict US interests, reported CNN.

Key Takeaways:

  • European troops are increasing their presence in Greenland amid US annexation threats.

  • Denmark warns an attack could dismantle NATO, leading to military cooperation.

  • Meetings yield an agreement on further discussions despite ongoing disagreements.

It's not about the number or strength of troops; it's about the symbolism and ensuring an annexation attempt results in an attack on NATO troops.

A sad day in history that we have to waste resources to defend against America.

As we've seen with Canada getting closer to China, countries will shift alliances.

Trump is doing massive harm long term. The usual checks around a president seem to have gone.

I’m thinking if the old fool still try’s it he will get impeached again same goes for pulling out of nato (to curry favor with the enemy’s of democracy) just beggers believe that this could even be a topic to discuss…..sad pathetic and disgraceful.

The only people in Europe who may support Trump's "move" against Greenland and Putin and his supporters.

If Trump is stupid enough to invade Greenland, which he is, one suspects that there will be a massive fragmentation of the GOP and the US military - already we have witnessed many military US officers resign or issue advice to military personnel to disobey "illegal" orders from Trump and the Department of War. Internationally, there will likely be significant boycotts of the USA and a suspension of diplomatic relations. Internationally, Trump may find himself more isolated than North Korea, and the new global pariah.

Trump refuses to rule out leaving NATO over Greenland

trump is so dumb he probably doesn't even know that he can't unilaterally withdraw from NATO. does he actually think that he could get two=thirds of the Senate to go along with his insanity?

Madman trump need to be removed by the american people

The Germans are sending 13 soldiers.

When was the last time you heard someone say "Yay, the German army is showing up?"

Hopefully, this was just a ruse to get Europe to step up defense of Greenland, this is what Trump will probably claim after the pushback, but you never know about Trump.
