Greenland PM Rejects Trump, Says Island Chooses Denmark

Greenland's prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated that Greenland would opt for Denmark over the US if asked to choose, in response to US President Donald Trump's renewed plan to annex the territory. Speaking at a joint news conference with Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Nielsen’s remarks represent the strongest stance from Greenland since the US began its push to own the island, citing strategic defence needs against Russia and China.

The US has proposed purchasing Greenland, but it has not ruled out the possibility of using force.

Greenland, semi-autonomous under Denmark, is strategically located between North America and the Arctic, making it crucial for early warning systems against missile attacks. Trump claims Greenland's significance is due to the presence of Russian and Chinese ships, though no evidence supports this. The existing US base in Greenland, Pituffik, has more than 100 military personnel, with agreements allowing unrestricted US troop presence. Despite this, Trump insists on ownership rather than a leasing arrangement.

Denmark's Frederiksen condemned the US's approach as "completely unacceptable pressure," highlighting its potential impact on NATO. She warned that more challenging times may be ahead, with Greenland affirming its choice for Denmark over US governance. Meanwhile, Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Vivian Motzfeldt are set to meet US representatives, Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to discuss these tensions.

NATO allies, including major European countries and Canada, have supported Denmark, asserting that only Denmark and Greenland can decide their relations. They emphasised maintaining collective Arctic security, abiding by the UN Charter, and respecting sovereignty. The announcement comes as concerns grow after Trump's recent military action in Venezuela and as interests in Greenland's natural resources rise due to climate change and potential reserves, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • Greenland's leader prefers Denmark over US annexation proposals.

  • US interest in Greenland is strategic, relating to Arctic security.

  • NATO backs Denmark's sovereignty amid rising geopolitical tensions.

fart doesnt care about the will of the people. He wont even allow an election to take place in 3 years time. He's gearing up for riots and then a national emergency to stop it indefinitely.

Would any Greenlander couple deliberately choose to have a healthcare insurance cost of $2,000 a month over free Healthcare?

Would they choose to be under the jurisdiction of a completely insane and totally unhinged president?

Would they choose to be subjects of a nation engaged in a newfound style of colonialism and imperialism?

Would they deliberately choose a lower quality of life that's more expensive?

Would they choose to be an enemy of NATO rather than an ally?

I certainly don't think so. Rejection of Trump is something that the entire planet should engage in collectively.

Now whatcha gonna do, Donald? Do you even care? You disgust us Europeans. How are you any better than Putin if you move on with your threats?

What do you feel now, Infantino? You still think your hero deserves the FIFA (lol) peace price?

What a joke you have made of yourself.

Many previous Presidents, having identified Greenland as a weak point in the USA's defences, have wanted to take over Greenland.

Greenland has nothing to do with USA defenses, stay in your own country.

Stunning ignorance.

Claiming other countries resources are part of your land's National Security is.

It doesn't matter what Greenland or Denmark government are thinking. Trump/US is going to cease Greenland! Europe/European are basically pu..y, European states are vassal states period!

Right. Trump will create a 'Jan 6' style chaos, and cancel the midterm elections.
Irony: Germany is sending troops to Greenland, trying to prevent American-Nazis (fascists) take over Greenland.
Anyone who supports democracy, should be in favor of self destiny for the people of Greenland.

Not True

Only Trump and Truman ever have, and Truman offered the equivalent of $1.7B and was rebuffed.

America can have as many military personnel as they want there. It's got nothing to do with defence, it's all about the natural resources.

And there's me thinking it is to do with making the US the second largest country by area.

The place currently held by Canada.

Trump is living by the illusion that other countries look up to USA now, and want what they got.. It must be a huge blow for him that Greenland chooses to be with Denmark, or wanting their own independence..

The US' health care policy is a deal-breaker in itself (compared to free health care), but there are hundreds of others reasons to stay clear of the US and the mess they have made.

I wouldn't even visit the US as long as these buffons run the country.

I'd love to hear the lying sack of rancid excrement Trump explain why the US needs Greenland for reasons of "national security". Maybe he now believes in climate change and the Arctic will melt? Or he expects a land invasion from countries that have supersonic ICBMs? Or maybe he thinks it's still the 18th Century and wars between major powers will be fought on the ground?

The clown just fancies himself a Neo Imperialist and wants the same recognition the US got for purchasing Alaska. So let's call his desire for Greenland "Sewer's Folly". Certainly with the word salad that spews from his addled and dementia-ridden brain, that's the kind of mistake he'd make with Steward's name.

I would love to see Viking Team 6 storm the White House and seize the fat man and bring him to Copenhagen to stand trial, Maduro style. Certainly Trump is far more of a threat to Greenland than Maduro ever was to the US.

Unfortunately, 75 million Americans did.

And your opinion is that that makes it legit to take over Greenland? That many previous US presidents have already drooled over Greenland. Although I very much doubt that many previous US presidents actually have. Maybe you can show some proof of your rather bold assertion?
During WWII, the US had over a dozen military bases in Greenland. Almost all of those were abandoned after the war. Greenland has expressed its willingness to allow the US to open up new military bases. Wouldn't that be enough to 'protect' Greenland and strengthen the USA's defence in that particular part of the globe? Why would the USA have to have control over all of Greenland? Make that make sense to me, please.

'Newfound'?

This is old fashioned imperialism 101, straight out of the Putin playbook. You know? That hero of his? He was very honest about that as well before the election and 77 million thought 'Great! Gotta vote for that!'. The rest couldn't muster enough votes to stop it. The country has the government it deserves. Let's se if it can recover. Looks increasingly dodgy - 3 more years to go.

I'll never forget when Trump actually said that Putin is a very smart man and leader, at an early stage of the war in Ukraine. He was impressed and looked up to that war criminal of a Russian president..

They were actually up to 17 bases and installations at one point all of which were dismantled except one. Now the leader of the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus vomes along, and decides he needs to control the place.

It would be interesting to know who was actually pulling the strings, Trump is more than likely just an impotent puppet, who is obeying the dictates of the deep state. A very radicalized deep state for sure.

The one thing that you can count on for sure when it comes to Trump is that whatever he says is not true, so if he says it's about security it's not, it's about something else. If he says it's about drugs it's not, it's about something else.

Stephen Miller is the Mussolini look-alike and errand boy slash gopher for the über wealthy oligarchs, many of them not even American. And Trump has been in Putin’s pocket for years. I think they’re mostly calling the shots now.

Trump always overstates his case prior to any negotiation. It's a tactic that has worked well over the years

Why a weak point? Since 1951 the USA had a treaty with Denmark that gave it virtually carte blanche to do as it pleases. In 2004 it was revised to give islanders an input. Up until 2025 relations with the locals were excellent. Of course, now....
