Trump Sparks Fury After Claim NATO Troops Dodged Afghan Front Line

Donald Trump has ignited fresh outrage in Britain and across Europe after claiming NATO allies stayed “a little off the front lines” during the war in Afghanistan — a remark condemned as an insult to thousands of fallen troops.

Speaking to Fox News, the US president questioned whether NATO would ever come to America’s aid, dismissing allied contributions to Afghanistan and suggesting European forces hung back while US troops did the fighting.

The backlash in Westminster was immediate and furious.

Labour MP Emily Thornberry, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, called Trump’s remarks an “absolute insult” to the 457 British service personnel killed in Afghanistan. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said Trump, who avoided military service, had no right to question the sacrifice of those who fought and died.

Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty, a former British Army officer who served in Afghanistan, said it was “sad to see our nation’s sacrifice, and that of our NATO partners, held so cheaply” by the US president. He stressed that British and American troops fought, bled and died together.

Dutch foreign minister David van Weel also rejected Trump’s claim as “false,” saying European soldiers “shed blood” alongside US forces. He said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had already corrected Trump on the issue — and that the truth needed to be repeated.

More than 3,500 coalition troops were killed during the conflict, including 2,461 Americans and 457 British personnel — the second-highest death toll of any allied nation.

The comments come amid broader strains in transatlantic relations, with Trump repeatedly questioning NATO’s value and demanding greater European military and financial commitments.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump’s claim NATO troops avoided combat triggered fury in the UK and Europe.

  • British politicians across parties called the remarks insulting and historically false.

  • Allied leaders warned Trump’s rhetoric risks damaging NATO unity and trust.
